Mob Appétit!

Mob Appétit!

Louis „Pretty“ Amberg, a Jewish gangster of the Kosher Nostra, used to enjoy Pastrami and salted pickles with his cronies at the Deli in the early 1930’s. Down-to-earth food for hard-working bandits. Even though Louis met his end in a quite barbaric manner shortly afterwards (we’ll spare you the details),  the new Jewish-American deli cuisine was born. This very traditional, albeit not kosher, cuisine has further developed and matured to this day and reaches it’s newest highlight with the „Louis Pretty“ in Kreuzberg. Oskar Melzer, co-founder of Mogg & Melzer, teamed up with James and David Ardinast, who he met as a teenager at summer camp, to fiddle about with the cured, smoked, cooked and marinated brisket of beef. The result is Pastrami at its finest. And the Berlin version of an authentically American Deli. With Joey Pasarella (that even sounds like he could be one of the good fellas) the kitchen remains in New Yorker hands – the interior decoration, however, has taken a trip down south: you can now enjoy the perfect Pastrami recipe surrounded by a colourful Palm Springs flair. Have you ever sat on a swimming pool? In the Ritterstrasse, you can. The tables have crystal-clear pool images printed on them, flamingo-pink chairs clash with the luscious orange walls. Those afraid this might be too much for their eyes can get their Pastrami variations, salads or soups to go. We think this splash of colour is just what the Rittertrasse needed. And are ready to fill up on filtered coffee, American Diner style. No matter whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner. Bete’avon!

Smart Parking

Smart Parking

Violation notice: your vehicle is parked in the parking area around Esmarchstraße 27 without a valid parking ticket. So far, we have transferred hundreds and hundreds of Euros to our pen pal, Berlin’s chief of police – with a feeling of remorse and discontent nonetheless. After all, most of the violations were not committed intentionally but instead due to lack of coins. So there we are, with our super-connected car that can detect rain, has remote-control-parking and can stream music from our smartphone, but we just can’t hack the ticket machine. There HAS to be a better way. And there is: Smart Parking powered by Mobile City. Got it. And there have been no more letters from an official authority since. There’s not really much more to say. An app that does what it should. Surely, there are probably plenty of similar apps around and everyone will find the most suitable. And we’ve definitely found ours. It’s called Smart Parking, it’s green and this is how it works: stick the identification badge on windscreen (parking attendants are, of course, digitally linked), open app, choose one of the listed ticket machines, type in licence plate number, select parking time and go! Payments are billed to your mobile. Really, nothing to it. Oh, and before your parking session runs out, the app even sends a text message to inform you. If you register, things get even easier: The app remembers your licence plate, the amount due is automatically charged to a refillable 15 Euro prepaid debit card, and the bill is neatly filed. The best part of it: you don’t need to estimate your parking time anymore. Just press play to start and press stop before you get back in your car. When was the last time you paid 23 cents for a parking session? Exactly. Please, keep the change! And remember to press the stop button! We forgot once… But we did get a refund. This is a good thing.

Know your type

Know your type

A profiler is a criminal investigator that draws conclusions about the perpetrator’s socio-economic characteristics based on evidence at the crime scene. He is a reflective snooper and meticulous thinker. And what profilers (on TV and in real life) do with people, is exactly what the Coffee Profilers do with coffee. And with people. The international founding team has made it its mission to bring together coffee lovers with the perfectly matching coffee variety. And the team works on various levels: For the main part, the Coffee Profilers are a coffee bar located in a place where you wouldn’t exactly suspect a nicely designed modern café – the very historic yet somewhat drab Karl-Marx-Allee. Stepping into this friendly and bright space, everything says coffee: the lovely scent, the display of items on sale, the extra long shelves filled with coffee machines. The friendly staff will inquire about your preferences concerning acidity and offer suitable varieties to choose from – which almost change daily. Feeling overwhelmed already? Don’t worry – the guys working the coffee machines know what you need. And are happy to tell you all about growing conditions, roasting levels, acidity and flavours. Listening to all this information, you can really see the passion light up their eyes. They talk about different qualities, filters and brews, and selected growing areas in high altitudes from which they receive their coffee. And all of a sudden there’s a whole new world beyond skinny latte. To top it all off, the Profilers also organise workshops and tastings. So if you’ve acquired a taste for exquisite coffee, you can learn even more than in the three minutes you have while you’re waiting for your coffee-to-go on your way to work. Or just order some really good coffee.

Sleep no more

Sleep no more

British composer Max Richter calls his piece SLEEP his »personal lullaby for a frenetic world«. The experimental composition premiers during an overnight performance at Kraftwerk Berlin on 15 of March. Musicians will perform the 8-hour piece scored for piano, strings, vocals and electronics and designed to send the listener into a soft slumber. Wrapped up in blankets or nestled in sleeping bags, the audience is welcome to slowly drift off into a land of dreams. With this extraordinary project Richter intends to explore the effect music has on the subconscious mind. We’re more than willing to help…Although SLEEP is just one of the artistic and discursive experiments featured during MaerzMusik –Festival for Time Issues. The second edition will take place from 11 to 20 March aiming to trace digital forms of time, explore non-analogue temporalities and examine „what happens to our time?“ – a frequently asked question within the rapidness of capitalism. Epic questions demand epic answers, or an epic debate at least. And so, from 19 to 20 March and with a duration of 30 hours, „The Long Now“ is the closing event of the festival. In this „place for the enduring present“, is where avant-garde concerts, contemporary performances, electronic live acts and visual-sonic installations merge to a greater whole. We can let ourselves float from sound to sound as we dare to forget time. If you’d like to join us in this self-experiment send an email titled „THE TIME. THE TIME!“ to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de. We’re giving away 1×2 tickets for the The Long Now. Sweet dreams.

Butter makes it better

Butter makes it better

Truth be told, we were a little doubtful at first: Brazilian-French cuisine? – A rather daring and unusual combination. We had tried to combine our culinary Brazil-experience (washing down black bean stew with beer for a week during carnival) with French gastronomic indulgence (everything land and sea has to offer from Kir Royal to Délice de Bourgogne) and failed miserably. But the Butterhandlung in Friedrichshain tells a very different story: this combo is extremely palatable indeed! Right from the start, the restaurant lives up to its name serving fresh bread with a selection of three different butter-varieties as a complementary appetiser. In olden days, this is where they used to make butter – today, it’s where it is cultivated, for example with truffles. Truffles play a major part here in general. If you order anything with truffles, you will definitely get truffles. And not just a few splashes of truffle-flavoured oil but rather a generous portion of the precious black diamonds. A professional (yet non-committal) wine or beer recommendation comes with every dish you choose – be it fish, meat or completely vegan. Non-drinkers will be rewarded with the fabulous Castro Street Lemonade that tastes like a summer holiday. Later on, the Bar Bobu, which is located at the back of the Butterhandlung, invites you to sip on swanky cocktails alongside live music and enjoy a charming jazzy vibe. Finally, Friedrichshain is getting what it deserves: a respectable restaurant that serves delicious food in a cosy atmosphere with an incredibly sophisticated staff far beyond the half-hearted monosodium glutamate hubs a few blocks away.

We want wool!

We want wool!

Do you knit? Not yet? Then you’d better get started with the »we are knitters« knitting kit. In 2011, Spanish wool lovers María José Marín and Alberto Bravo founded the knitting collective and have been committed to reviving the contemplative tradition of knitting ever since. Meanwhile, knitting has not only conquered the world’s biggest cities but has also won over our hearts. Forget the cliché of the knitting gran or the boring housewife pastime – grab some needles and hurl yourself into an artisanal adventure. The wool aficionados promise »all the happiness in a kit« and offer pretty little knitting sets for all levels including your choice of wool, needles and patterns inspiring you to create your own style with everything the knitting-universe has to offer: hats, scarves, sweaters, pillows or even Christmas decoration. From fabric yarn to merino wool, crocheting, knitting or petit point. Just follow the patterns or watch video tutorials on the website and learn new tricks and techniques. We thought we’d give the triangle scarf a go – seemed easy enough. Well, turns out it’s not. But it is loads of fun and we’ll get the hang of it eventually… And soon enough, we’ll be wearing it with pride!

Nastrovje and…roll it!

Nastrovje and…roll it!

Russia. Vast spaces, endless birch forests, a touch of tragic melancholy. When we think of Russia we think of vodka and hot tea, a harsh climate with freezing cold nights. Instinctively we long for a warm and cosy place. Like a movie theatre, for example. Or a sauna. From February 8th–12th, you can have both. During the Russian Film Eeek, the “Bleiche, Resort & Spa“ – one of our all-time favourite hotels – is celebrating Russian cinema, which is as diverse as the country itself. Four whole days featuring the cinematic variety from nature documentaries to Oscar-winning historical period dramas and contemporary thrillers from and about Russia. The film program will be topped off with Russian culinary treats such as pierogi (What is it with them?!) and the bread-drink kvass. Complete the traditional Russian experience in the Country Spa: in addition to numerous treatments, the spa in the Spree Forest also offers Russian Banjas. Unwind your body and mind in the birch wood sauna and enjoy hot tea from a samovar and a soothing massage given by the bannik – the incarnation of the true spirit of Russian bathing. Afterwards, kick back and relax on a comfy cinema lounger – with a clear head and some clear vodka.

A healing experience

mmw_agape_zoe

A healing experience

Let’s hear it for modern medicine! Never before was humanity able to cure diseases, repair injuries and significantly prolong life to the extent it can today. Despite this fact – or precisely because of it – we’ve pretty much distanced ourselves from almost everything our forefathers have achieved to alleviate and cure physical maladies. Thank heavens one might think, considering traditional treatments including herbal elixirs, the universal weapon of cod liver oil or sawing open the top of skulls due to depression or any other emotional instability. Nowadays, we swallow antibiotics, correct or replace faulty parts and by doing so we’re inhibiting our body’s ability to heal itself. But in fact, our body is capable of amazing things and sometimes we just get in the way with all of our remedies and ad hoc solutions. To heal also means to build a foundation for health, well-being, strength and energy. There is a difference between feeling sick and actually feeling healthy and vigorous. This is exactly where  the Agape Zoe Healing Arts Festival, which is taking place for the second time in Berlin this weekend, comes in. More than 30 international „healing artists“ such as massage specialists, meditation gurus, yogis and osteopaths invite visitors to explore modern alternative healing practices for body, mind and soul. Ancient healing arts are transported into a contemporary context and interweaved with modern disciplines, such as, for example combining yin yoga with sound healing. This generates synergies and encourages visitors to try new methods and integrate them into their daily lives. Therapists will practise and demonstrate the Grindberg Method, osteopathy, Theta Healing, holistic bodywork and massages on the „Healing Floor.“ The „Silence Healing Room“ offers dynamic breathing and healing meditation in small groups. Highlights include a „Soulful Piano Journey“ with pianist Laura Weider, who once made it into the Guinness Book of World Records by playing a 40 hour solo piano set (!), a Thai-massage-workshop with Pascal Beaumart, the LOMI LOMI SISTERS with their Four Hands Hawaiian Massage, and festival founder Serap Kara’s Cacao Meditation. Day tickets are 39 Euros apiece, festival tickets for both days are available here for 59 Euros: send an email titled HEALING IS THE NEW YOGA to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de.

Nina Klein

Nina Klein

The 2 Minute-Interview

Nina Klein is a real whizz kid. A stylist at heart, she started her own agency and earned universal fame, then launched a jewellery label and recently created her very own app. What?! Exactly. It’s about time to ask Nina some serious questions about her workload – on a friendly basis, of course. After all, she is part of our highly appreciated clientele and therefore practically family. Fun fact: Our dear senior PR expert Nina Z. got married a while ago. Her new surname: Klein. Confused? That’s what we thought.

Name: Nina Klein
Age: 45
City: Berlin
Job: entrepreneuse and business coach for women
Shoe size: 42
Favourite time of day: Any time after 8:00 am.
Contact: mail@nina-klein.de

Agency, jewellery label, and now an app – trouble making up your mind or what?
Definitely not. The combination is what makes every day exciting. The different stages of all of my projects and companies keep me curious and on my toes, and help me to stay humble. This way all of my companies can benefit from each other as well.

What is your definition of beauty?
Authenticity.

What do you see when you look in the mirror?
Most of the time, I see a person full of zest for life.

The Queen invites you to tea – what do you wear?
I would consult one of my stylists first. Or I’d decline. Tea with the Queen…hmmm… I’d prefer tea with Charles…

Your three most important tools?
Mobile, laptop, mascara.

What is your definition of success?
Being able to earn money with what you’re good at and really like doing. Or the moment everything just falls into place just like you had planned in the beginning – when it was still an idea.

What are you currently struggling with?
With the cold in Berlin and with the fact that this year, I won’t be opening a pop-up office in the sun for my agency in February but during autumn instead.

What should everyone have done in his or her life at least once?
Paragliding from Lion’s Head in Cape Town.

What is your favourite place in Berlin (besides your home)?
My secret little garden – right around the corner from my place. No one is ever there at the weekends!

With whom would you like to go out for gin&tonics?
Bobby Dekeyser.

If we visited you at home, what would you cook for us?
Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) – or quinoa with spinach, peas and Shitake mushrooms.

What would you do if you were afraid of absolutely nothing at all?
Already live in the sun by the sea.

If you could change the world, where would you start?
Find a solution for the still existing hunger in the world.

What should no one know about you?
That I know almost every „Sex and the City“ scene by heart.

Which question should we have asked?
Whether I use my new app climbr productivity myself, or when the new Charity Collection by Nadja Auermann for my jewellery label Besafeangel will appear or where am I going to open a pop-up office for my agency this year?

Last words:
It’s all a matter of intention.

Come hai trovato il film?

Come hai trovato il film?

t happened during an exchange year in New Zealand: unsuspectingly sitting in front of the television and all of a sudden, there he was: Tom Selleck. And Tom Selleck’s real and very American voice. Of course, Magnum didn’t speak German – why should he, he was in Hawaii after all – but that he actually sounded that different (and definitely not any better) was rather disappointing  to say the least. This awakening experience led to the following insight: synchronised films are simply not the real thing. AT ALL. So it is all the more enjoyable that a former bakery in Kreuzberg is now home to the arthouse cinema »Il Kino« which features films from all over the world in original language with subtitles; films that have been praised during festivals yet find no distribution in Germany. A team just as international as the carefully selected program founded the 52-seat cinema: the Italian-German-Norwegian crew follows a concept that has already been a great success in Rome since 2010. At that time, a group of 54 directors, screenwriters, cutters and actors had brought to life exactly the kind of cinema they would like to go to themselves. And we’re very happy to go with them. The bar at Il Kino offers a fine selection of Italian wines and serves fresh antipasti till 10pm and that way encourages you to discuss – and digest – the somewhat demanding films afterwards.
