Days Like This

MMW_Clue

Time of the month, period, menstruation, monthlies, the curse – the female cycle is both a miracle and a weak spot. Always there, or again and again – periodically to be precise – hushed in public, packed away fit for swimming and cycling and, thanks to pill, coil, ring and the like, always timed accurately. Modern life planning, you call it, medical progress or just convenience. In our neck of the woods, the first period – the lingo is menarche – usually starts when girls are between 11 and 14 years old. This “happening” often also marks the time we administer hormonal contraception to our bodies for the first time. And – hey presto – we’re between 24 and 34 years old and have suddenly spent most of our lives under the influence of hormones. No offense, but how does the body react now when we take this concoction away again? Where do the mood swings, migraines and general discomfort come from? What is normal? What does my body need? What does my diet have to do with it and my sleeping patterns? How can I feel my actual self more again? Learn on which days I’m fertile, feel capable and powerful or like total rubbish? Ida Tin wanted answers to exactly these questions. In 2013, she launched her app CLUE with the goal to change the way we handle our period. The result is something like the monthly calendar of our time with over 5 million active users. Confident, scientific and not pink! With CLUE, you can keep track of yourself, your body and your menstrual cycle. Which is much more complex than you think. CLUE uses a special algorithm to calculate and forecast your individual cycle. The app also provides information on topics such as PMS, pain or pregnancy and leaves space for personal notes. CLUE wants to make women confident about their own fertility and make a real contribution to healthy family planning. Oh, and it’s free, of course. You can download it in the App Store or Google Play Store. Your body, your miracle.

Indulge

43 new emails in your inbox, deadline in two and a half hours, Granny’s birthday and don’t forget that grocery shopping, grab a bite and deflect the phone call from your best friend and oh no, the post office closes in 10 minutes… Stop. Pause. Breathe. Come around again. Even though your New Year’s resolutions included being more mindful, taking more breaks for some me-time, the daily grind just keeps getting in the way. Even just ten minutes micro-holiday per day would make all the difference for spirit, well-being and inner peace. This is where Andy comes in. Andy Puddicombe, the guy with the formidable British accent, dropped out of his sports science studies years ago in favour of travelling the Himalayans and get involved with meditation. This experience was the foundation for the Headspace-App, the virtual mental pause button for every day. This App provides meditation exercises for all needs and levels. The best access for sceptics who still confuse meditation with the collective singing of mantras in the smoke of incense sticks is the programme Take Ten, which is free of charge. Andy’s warm and calming voice leads you through 10 minutes of mindfulness on 10 consecutive days. We tested the programme and are now totally OMM. After the test comes the subscription (for iPhone, Android or computers) and access to hundreds of exercises from 2 minutes to an hour, with and without instructions. Smaller bits are available for certain everyday situations, the SOS-Session, for example, for acutely difficult moments. Whole series attend to a particular focus – be it health, performance or relationships. Meditation supports concentration, the small breaks protect from excessive stress and help reduce fears and find inner balance – positive effects on physical health, creativity and relationship behaviour included. So we won’t be ignoring that best friend’s call – instead, we’ll invite her to dinner and then placidly answer the 10 most important emails. »Free your mind, and the rest will follow«

Smart Parking

Smart Parking

Violation notice: your vehicle is parked in the parking area around Esmarchstraße 27 without a valid parking ticket. So far, we have transferred hundreds and hundreds of Euros to our pen pal, Berlin’s chief of police – with a feeling of remorse and discontent nonetheless. After all, most of the violations were not committed intentionally but instead due to lack of coins. So there we are, with our super-connected car that can detect rain, has remote-control-parking and can stream music from our smartphone, but we just can’t hack the ticket machine. There HAS to be a better way. And there is: Smart Parking powered by Mobile City. Got it. And there have been no more letters from an official authority since. There’s not really much more to say. An app that does what it should. Surely, there are probably plenty of similar apps around and everyone will find the most suitable. And we’ve definitely found ours. It’s called Smart Parking, it’s green and this is how it works: stick the identification badge on windscreen (parking attendants are, of course, digitally linked), open app, choose one of the listed ticket machines, type in licence plate number, select parking time and go! Payments are billed to your mobile. Really, nothing to it. Oh, and before your parking session runs out, the app even sends a text message to inform you. If you register, things get even easier: The app remembers your licence plate, the amount due is automatically charged to a refillable 15 Euro prepaid debit card, and the bill is neatly filed. The best part of it: you don’t need to estimate your parking time anymore. Just press play to start and press stop before you get back in your car. When was the last time you paid 23 cents for a parking session? Exactly. Please, keep the change! And remember to press the stop button! We forgot once… But we did get a refund. This is a good thing.

Good data

Good data

Data is today’s currency. As we’re generously handing out information about ourselves and the lives we lead anyway, we might as well turn all this free information into cash. And instead of lining our own pockets – and keeping karma in mind – we could do some good with it, too. This is where the Goodnity app comes into play: it generates money from information and transfers it to charity projects. Let’s be honest, if we ever had the guts to actually add up the hours we waste on our mobile devices every day, we’d probably not be able to stomach the naked truth. Now, we can actually fund donations for social projects with a few clicks, instead of constantly losing ourselves in a nirvana of endless gaming, scrolling our way up and down news feeds or watching cute animal videos on repeat. Fact is, most of the twenty- or thirtysomethings around have never supported charities financially. There could be many reasons for this, but usually it’s simply the lack of extra cash. With their humanistic approach, Marc, Maximlian and Keith, the founders of Goodnity, are bringing together what belongs together: businesses and people. Thanks to Goodnity, the budgets that companies would invest in market research anyway, can now go to a good cause. Users anonymously answer questions of interested companies and collect money with every answered question. The benefiting companies then give the total amount accumulated by the answers to social projects selected by the users. The best part of it: It’s a win-win-win situation. The companies receive information, we earn extra Karma points and humanistic projects get extra dinero. It goes without saying, of course, that all data is kept secure. Our recommendation for Goodnity comes from the very bottom of our hearts.

Squeeze the day

If life gives you a lemon – challenge it! This is what the very likable guys behind LEMON must have had in mind when they started developing their ultimate app. Remember the smartphone quiz-craze? Or all those sport-apps helping you to conquer your weaker self with extra short training routines? Well, LEMON is the queen of all challenge-apps bringing together what is fun, encouraging you to take action, to strive a little higher and to squeeze the most out of every day. The idea is simple: you can challenge yourself, your friends or even strangers in all sorts of different ways using the LEMON app. The challenge can either be kept private or made public by invitation. It’s not only about achieving sportive goals – the challenges can easily be applied to any part of daily life as the app is a reminder, journal and motivation machine all in one. “Drink three litres of water every day for one month”, “Ride your bike to work for three weeks“, “Do as many push-ups as you can in 10 days” – just to name a few suggestions to help you get started. The user can choose between different challenge categories either aiming for speed, maximum score or perseverance. The first version of LEMON is available for download at the Google Play Store and the App Store. We’ve had access to a test link for quite a while now and have been in total challenge-mode ever since. Bring.It.On.
