Far away, so close

And suddenly, he was there, the small Frenchman with the bombastic sound. And created music that went straight into the nervous system and dancing legs. That was in 2013. Yoann Lemoine aka. Woodkida tireless, versatile genius, musician and film director stepped on to the stage and into the scene. In his newest Project that goes by the name of „Ellis“, both art forms melt together. The French Street Artist JRdirected a moving short film about migrants whose first contact with land after months on the ocean on the the way to America was Ellis Island at the gates of New York. The small island in sight of but just out of reach of New York was a place of destiny and, for many, the end of the line for their longing for a better life – the promised land almost close enough to touch yet unreachable. The grand master of acting Robert De Niro remembers in the form of a fictitious story of two stranded characters. To underline the powerful images, Woodkid composed a moving soundtrack full of poetry. The melancholic piano sounds are played by Nils Frahm, to whom we also owed the Piano Day at the end of March. The film can be viewed online, the soundtrack will be available from July 8th as a mini album – including the sound of Robert De Niro’s voice, telling a story like the ones happening at boarders around the world today. That’s why all proceeds from the album with the soft, gentle tones will go to the charitable initiative Sea Watch, which is committed to the protection and rescue of civil refugees.

Nastrovje and…roll it!

Nastrovje and…roll it!

Russia. Vast spaces, endless birch forests, a touch of tragic melancholy. When we think of Russia we think of vodka and hot tea, a harsh climate with freezing cold nights. Instinctively we long for a warm and cosy place. Like a movie theatre, for example. Or a sauna. From February 8th–12th, you can have both. During the Russian Film Eeek, the “Bleiche, Resort & Spa“ – one of our all-time favourite hotels – is celebrating Russian cinema, which is as diverse as the country itself. Four whole days featuring the cinematic variety from nature documentaries to Oscar-winning historical period dramas and contemporary thrillers from and about Russia. The film program will be topped off with Russian culinary treats such as pierogi (What is it with them?!) and the bread-drink kvass. Complete the traditional Russian experience in the Country Spa: in addition to numerous treatments, the spa in the Spree Forest also offers Russian Banjas. Unwind your body and mind in the birch wood sauna and enjoy hot tea from a samovar and a soothing massage given by the bannik – the incarnation of the true spirit of Russian bathing. Afterwards, kick back and relax on a comfy cinema lounger – with a clear head and some clear vodka.

Who we are

Who we are

„I am one man among seven billion others. For the past 40 years, I have been photographing our planet and its human diversity, and I have the feeling that humanity is not making any progress. We are still incapable of living together. Why? I didn’t look for an answer in statistics or analysis, but in man himself. Today, it is in eyes, in faces and in words that I see a forceful means of reflecting the human soul.“ Yann Arthus-Bertrand, renowned photographer and director, is driven by the question of what it really means to be human. A unique combination of testimonies and self-reflection, the documentary “Human” analyses the lives of people on our planet that have been torn apart by wars and conflicts and at the same time maintained by empathy and solidarity. For three years, Yann Arthus-Bertrand travelled the world to interview over 2000 people in 70 countries and to photograph their environments. The interviews are complemented by contributions from journalists and human rights activists. HUMAN is a powerful portrait of mankind that reflects on topics such as women, justice, tolerance, poverty, war and happiness from different perspectives and reveals the differences and similarities that lie in the unknown and ultimately in our own self. A film intended to be seen by the world. The GoodPlanet foundation, initiated by Arthus-Bertrand, is committed to making this film accessible to as many people as possible. It’s being screened in cinemas, schools, the Internet and even at the UN General Assembly. All three parts of the documentary are available for free and in full HD on the YOUTUBE channel. What makes us human beings? What defines humanity? How do we become who we are? How much of us is part of seven billion others?

Larger than life

Larger than life

Anton Corbijn creates icons. He is considered the „house“ photographer of bands such as U2 and Depeche Mode and famously created alluring monochrome images of heroes larger than life. Somehow the quiet Dutchman has a soft spot for these figures drawn by harsh light and shadows. Not only in his photographs but also in moving pictures, the artist repeatedly comes close to the little things in the lives of the Great. For example, he created a cinematic monument portraying the life of Joy Division’s singer Ian Curtis, which seems to represent the final act in the work of the singer who committed suicide so long ago. His latest work is dedicated to the greatest poster boy of all time. It tells the story about the relationship between young celebrity photographer Dennis Stock and fast rising star James Dean. On a trip to Dean’s home, Stock takes some of the most iconic shots that will later manifest the glory of the actor who is fatally injured only shortly after. Corbijn’s approach is as simple as it is ingenious. The dramatic plot is narrowed down to a point to where you feel you’re actually turning the pages of a book and not seeing 24 or more frames per second flash past your eyes. Don’t get me wrong – it is far from static. Corbijn has discovered motion and has grown to love it. And he’s always had an eye for composition anyway. This is definitely a must-see.

Victoria!

Victoria!

So much has been said about this crazy cinematic roller coaster ride, the „coup of German cinema“, the „best film since Lola Rennt“. In one single 140-minute take the director Sebastian Schipper tells the story of the Spanish girl Victoria who meets four bad boys in a Berlin club and drifts through the city streets with them until the break of dawn. In the age of picture perfect and technically flawless Hollywood productions films are fantastic to look at but also decrease in intensity. Just imagine what a film like Boyhood would do with us, had it not been manipulated into a TV magazine aesthetic. Or how much actual horror would have been left in The Blair Witch Project without that shaky handheld camera? Film productions are compartmentalized projects with countless parties involved and too many responsible people focused on eliminating unforeseen occurrences. Under these circumstances we can barely imagine what it means to shoot an entire movie with just one camera – continuously, without one single cut. What if the lead actress forgets her lines at minute 139? You have to start all over again… It’s not like at the theater, where actors can quickly cover up mistakes with a smile or flippant remark directed at the audience. This approach is as radical as it is ingenious and its incredible success is well deserved. The proximity and immediacy of Schipper’s film has something rather magical to it. The film premiered at this year’s Berlinale and now is finally out for everyone to see. It’s playing at all our favourite Yorck Group cinemas such as the Passage and Delphi. GO. AND. SEE. IT.
