Rooted in Berlin

Niko Rittenau is from Carinthia in Austria. Chubby as a child, skinny as a teenager, until finally discovering a world of healthy and mindful food for himself. Niko moved to Vienna, completed training as a Gourmet Raw Food Chef at the Matthew Kenney Academy in California and arrived in Berlin in 2013. Good for him. And good for Berlin – his veggie supper clubs are legendary. For one, the food is incredibly delicious and secondly, it’s even more than that. Niko shares details on products and manufacturing in context while presenting the exciting and yummy possibilities of a plant-based diet. He considers himself the link between producer and guest and as a cook he would like to promote attentiveness towards high-quality, sustainable and healthy food. Meals are prepared with local ingredients grown in and around Berlin. His new vegan super club “Conscious Cooking” starts tomorrow at the Leogant Loft – and is completely sold out. But we’ve reserved two seats at the table for those with the biggest appetite for knowledge. So get cracking and send an email with the subject “FLEISCH IST KEIN GEMÜSE” to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de.

Remember Dieter Roth?

mmw_Dieter_Roth

Remember Dieter Roth?

Well, you should. Dieter Roth was a multi-talent and worked in widely ranged media such as drawing, painting, assemblage, installation, printmaking, artist’s books, literature, action and film. His numerous music-related projects though have remained little known so far. But that’s about to change: „And away with the minutes“ – opening this Friday at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin – is the first exhibition to show the artist’s music-related work comprehensively. Music played an important role for Roth all his life and affects his oeuvre in many different ways. He integrated musical instruments into his assemblages as mute reliefs alongside cassette players and other audio devices, for example, and uses them as motifs in his paintings and works on paper. Roth even performed as a musician himself, playing alone or as a member of the artists collective ‚Selten gehörte Musik‘ (Rarely heard Music), with his Viennese artist friends and at home with his children. Roth had an extensive vinyl collection and his own recording studio. He loved classical music, Schubert, Brahms and Schonberg in particular. The exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof is complemented by selected works of artists showing parallels with Roth’s musical oeuvre and celebrates the connection between visual arts and music. It runs from March 14th to August 16th. Free admission to the opening this Friday from 8–11pm.

High and Low

High and Low

Escaping the world is the true meaning of life for Moritz and the first-person narrator. Escaping from society, everyday life, and all normative forces. Sublime is only what cannot be controlled nor made use of. Drugs, creativity and the veil of darkness are their gateway to greatness. But one day in the middle of summer, Moritz disappears and the narrator is overcome by a feeling of isolation and solitude he has never felt before. He sets out to search for Moritz, but the places that previously set the stage for their life of ecstasy and youthful hedonism show no trace of him whatsoever. This is a tale about exhaustion, disappointment, fear, defiance, and finally understanding that you can escape everything. Except yourself. Boris Pofalla, author of „Low“, was born in 1983 and is a literary scholar, an art critic for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and prefers to drink his coffee black. In his debut novel he uses plain, calm and pure language to describe the story of an awakening and to portray the way of life of a brilliant and sensitive yet narcissist generation. This book was on the hotlist of the KulturSpiegel for Leipzig book fare (27 out of 20.000!) for a good reason: With his laid-back and unpretentious narrative tone, Pofalla manages to strike the right chord better than anyone else. Prior to the official release on March 9th 2015, the author will be reading from his book at 7 pm this evening at the grand Schinkel Pavillon. Both book and location are well worth the trip, making this occasion a fantastic double feature. After the reading there will be some – most likely somewhat ecstatic – celebrating at Larry’s on Chauseestraße. Drinks at the bar and Britta Thie on the decks. Free admission to reading and party. Culture slam, here we come!

Weinmomente goes Munich!

When exactly does wine go from really good to perfect? That’s right, the moment you enjoy it! It’s not like we’re short of occasions to drink wine, but our favourite online wine shop GEILE WEINE is throwing a Kick Off Party in lovely Munich and is bringing along some of the finest drops it has to offer – and we’re not going to miss it! Not one moment of it. The event series WEINMOMENTE will be held regularly from now on in the Bavarian capital, too. YAY! An evening of wine tasting – but without all the shoptalk and spitting. Instead, the tasting is always linked to special events such as exhibitions, concerts, picnics, watching a football match and whatnot. Go to www.geileweine.de/events for detailed information about upcoming tastings. Tomorrow, March 5th, the cool kids from Mainz are getting things started at Tante Erna’s. Need we say more? Well, maybe this much: the opening will give you a taste of what to expect in the next couple of months. Enjoy all sorts of moments at different themed bars with good music, snacks and that perfect glass of wine to match every time. Admission is free.

Time to say Goodbye

mmw_lehrter17

Time to say Goodbye

That’s all folks! After just one and a half years it’s time to say goodbye to one of the most exciting temporary projects of the past few years. LEHRTER SIEBZEHN at Lehrter Straße 17 (exactly!) is closing its curtains. Forever. Nothing endures but change and believing in the power of change has always been the driving force behind the creators. LEHRTER SIEBZEHN aka L17 originated in 2013 from a collaboration between the property owners and the curatorial duo SEEMS professional. On a total surface of 550 square metres L17 offered space for artistic and cultural interaction, social discourse and was also a platform for promising talents. But before taking off into Post-Lehrter-Galaxies, it´s time to celebrate one last time and one thing is for sure: this grand finale will be a closing party to remember! In the usual LEHRTER manner, old and new friends will be collaborating to present a grand line up of installations, exhibitions, music and yummy nibbles. Pussykrew and the great Pfadfinderei will be there as well as Luca Pozz, Syc, Georgia Girl, Cellographicsw/Konstantin Manaev & Tatsuru Arai and many more. Admission is free, fun is guaranteed. So let´s teardown and start afresh!

Life is not a … subway station

Life is not a… subway station.

Once again the freezing winter cold is making life extremely hard for people on the streets. Whether by choice or forced, several thousands of people spend the whole winter with no roof over their heads, regardless of how cold it is. The awareness and fundraising campaign “One Warm Winter”, brought to life by Friends with Benefits, street-magazine “strassenfeger” and advertising agency DOJO, has been making contributions for years in the most berlinesque way possible: without the finger-wagging but with lots of cool faces instead. Thanks to Marteria, Palina and co, the “Das Leben ist kein U-Bahnhof”-sweater is a must-have even among the most stylish of hipsters. See what other great items you can shop here. And this Friday the booziest charity-party of all is returning… While some people only associate charity with social agenda, the prominent contributors get straight to the point. Besides PALINA ROJINSKI, LARY and BALBINA the One-Warm-Winter-Festival is bustling with secret special acts. Led into the great depths of the chardonnay-charity scene by the enchanting voice of VISA VIE, they all make it their mission to bring you the hottest night of the year yet. Show up, spend some money, and make helpies – not selfies. Bravo!

Have a seat, please!

Kiez Sofa

Have a seat, please!

Once upon a time in a little village along the river Rhine there was a little sofa. And on this little sofa sat the most glorious guests the neighbourhood had to offer. Each of them had a great story to tell and hooray, the whole neighbourhood was all ears. One of these guests was Simon Akstinat and he was so touched, thrilled and entertained by what he heard, that without further ado, he decided to import this concept to his new neighbourhood: Berlin Neukölln. The local talk show “Kiez Sofa”, hosted by Simon Akstinat and cofounder Nadine Kleifges, welcomes local guests from Neukölln (famous or not) to talk about their extraordinary life stories, because nothing is more exciting or pleasing than finding out more about the people who live just around the corner. Musicians, globetrotters, entrepreneurs, politicians and artists take a seat on the Kiez Sofa to spill the beans about their personal connection to Neukölln and everyday life there. There is no main topic, the only thing the guests have in common is calling Neukölln their home. Next Monday, Simon and Nadine will be talking to Neukölln-born TV-author and journalist Güner Balci, never shy to hit hot topics, the team behind “Auf halber Treppe”, who host a staircase coffee-klatsch to get neighbours networking, and Neukölln astrologist Roger Nikodemus. Number 4 on the sofa is a musician or an entrepreneur and definitely still a secret. Come to the Prachtwerk on Ganghofer Straße on February 23 to find out who it is. Grab a seat and enjoy!
