Ten years and still going strong

Ten years and still going strong

Oh my, the St. Oberholz! A temple of digital Berlin Bohème for some and the path to the forever glowing apple for others. But after exactly ten years now, the cafe located directly at Rosenthaler Platz is far more than that. When Ansgar Oberholz opened his shop in 2005, countless concepts for the same place had already failed – including a Burger King Franchise. (Kind of makes you wonder how this was even possible during the early noughties?!) Meanwhile, Rosenthaler Platz has turned into a Mitte Hotspot, the once godforsaken Torstraße has come to life and the cosmopolitan creative power of the capital city is sprouting everywhere. Just a question of luck? No, not at all. The driving force of St.Oberholz is one of the main reasons why this area has evolved the way it has. Berlin’s start-up scene is booming, revolutionary ideas are born (and discarded again), young creatives from around the world are drawn here – lured by the dream of the next big thing and a way of life that releases potential rather than limiting it. The St.Oberholz does not only serve good coffee and organic snacks, it’s an office space, a meeting room and has been the birthplace of some of the best concepts that the city has spawned in recent years. You can practically taste the sweet spirit of entrepreneurship when you walk in. Upstairs you can now officially book co-working spaces or even rent guestrooms another flight up. St. Oberholz has taken things to an even higher level with its own publishing company and their sister company St. Meze is winning fame for its coffee and cakes. Today there’ll be a big ten year anniversary bash with music and snacks and tons of founder stories (including those famous aha moments). Plenty of good reasons to stop by and return to the place where it all – or at least something – began for so many. Let’s raise our soy lattes to that – Happy Birthday!

Spiky little things

Spiky little things

Forget rock ‘n’ roll, the Love Parade, parties and underground clubs. Plants and veggies are the new hip. First 20.000 hungry Berliners wanted to visit the little town of Beelitz to get a taste of the most delicious asparagus, then everybody (really, EVERYBODY) kept posting pictures of cherry blossoms, and now this: Tomorrow, the Berlin Cactus Days begin at the Botanische Garten in Dahlem. Whoohoo! There’ll be a huge exhibition showing 15 thematically arranged displays of African succulents (Aloe, Euphorbia, Haworthien, Askleps, Mesembs, Lithops, Conophyten), American Cacti, agaves and various seedlings. Dealers and interested buyers can choose from a one-of-a-kind range of cacti, succulents and other exotic plants, paraphernalia and specialized literature! #IAmFreakinOut! After all, how did someone recently put it via some social network: “The cactus is the new lavalamp! Just sayin’…” Yup, true story – 4,500 visitors have registered already. We’ll be there, too – watching out for those prickly little beasts!

Something is brewing

Craft Beer is the word. In the motherland of beer the great hop culture is experiencing a true revival, lifting the regular brew into unknown flavourful spheres. The German Reinheitsgebot and natural ingredients are a top priority nonetheless. Craft beer is all about a laid-back and customer-oriented approach on a traditional product without the economic pressure of corporate structure. Hand crafted beer at its best. It’s about creating new flavours and experiences using different brewing methods and hop varieties. The diversity is close to the one found in wine-growing: colour, scent, flavour, aftertaste – it’s all there. From tomorrow on (yay, right on time for the holiday!) and until Sunday, the Berlin Brewery Festival will be held on the RAW grounds in Berlin Friedrichshain (a slightly different take on the subject compared to the mob at the Biermeile on Karl-Marx-Allee). A “Craft Beer Village”, between Badehaus Szimpla and Neue Heimat, will be home to 65 Berlin breweries and international craft beer makers for three days. The list of exhibitors reads like the who’s who of the craft beer scene – the German Breweries for instance, were carefully selected by the Berlin Beer Academy. There’ll be street food from the Village Market next door and a bunch of talks and tastings. Your beer will be served in an original Rastal „Craft Master One“ glass, available for a 2 Euro deposit. Hold on to it well – you’ll need it to taste your way through all 65 stalls. (The occasional glass of water might be good. And food. Remember to have some food.) If you fancy, you can let everyone know about your discoveries and favourite flavours: evaluate the beers you tasted on www.m.braufest-berlin.de. Okay, we already made our choice. Our personal favourite is named BRLO from Berlin. Fun fact: When you enter the grounds, you’ll get a festival card that works like a debit card – fill it up with the desired amount and you’re good to go. No more searching your pockets for change or wondering where all your money went the next morning… Cheers to that!

The salt of our souls

The salt of our souls

„I have lost faith in us.“ A statement made by the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. It is the interim conclusion of his now 71 year long life, determined by the search for the origin of love – face-to-face with terror – and marked by deep disappointment regarding human nature. By „us“ he means our species, the human being as such. Salgado has documented and stylized the suffering of civilisation like no other. His work lives from immediacy – in order to get his images, Salgado exposed himself to the dangers of crisis areas for months. After witnessing and documenting the horrors of the Rwandan Genocide against the Tutsis in 1994, Salgado suffered a breakdown. Being confronted with death and brutality, his body decided it had had enough and started fighting back. Ten years later Salgado resumed his travels – in small propeller-driven aircrafts, on foot, by boat, in a folding kayak and a captive balloon he set out to places not yet known to civilization. For eight years he worked on his project „Genesis“, photographing archaic volcanic landscapes, arctic ice masses, meandering river canyons, mountain chains enveloped in mist, primordial rainforests and endless sand dunes and documenting the stunning beauty and rich diversity of unspoiled natural landscapes, as well as indigene peoples in opulent black-and-white photographs. This piece of work holds 250 photographs; the gigantic exhibition officially opens this Friday at the C/O Berlin and will be displayed until August 16th, 2015. On Saturday, the C/O is also hosting a special event at the Delphi Filmpalast: There will be a screening of the impressive documentary „The Salt of the Earth“, in which Wim Wenders and Salgado’s son Juliano give insight on the photographer’s creative work. Afterwards, Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, will be talking to Sebastião Salgado about the relationship between mankind and nature. The word genesis is Greek and means as much as beginning or birth of something new. It describes the creation of the world in a biblical sense. Perhaps Salgado is trying to bring us back to the perfection and purity of beginnings from which we have led ourselves astray and make an appeal to preserve part of the planet in all its original and fascinating diversity. Perhaps his images of harmoniously flowing rivers and peaceful beings have helped him create his own version of a perfect world – stylized, black-and-white and immaculate. He does at least reduce man to a background actor, not being worth more or less than any other creature on the planet. That thought pleases us: humbleness and the natural belief of our place in a divine structure lie in it. Salgado has not lost faith. On the contrary, his work reveals tireless drive and incurable love.

‚Tis the Spargel Season

‚Tis the Spargel Season

We had it all figured out two weeks ago: set up the mandatory Facebook event link and send out a press release for the asparagus event taking place at Refugium Beelitz on May 9th. Oh, plenty of time for fine-tuning information and making sure two or maybe three thousand asparagus-crazy city slickers find their way to the abandoned ruins of the former tuberculosis sanatorium on the outskirts of Berlin. Then, we went to bed. By the time we woke up the next morning, a few thousand people had already clicked and said they were coming. Within 36 hours, it was ten thousand, now almost eighteen thousand. Well, what can we say? Let’s face it, asparagus is the new black, idyllic countryside is the new hip and Brandenburg is the new Berlin. For all of you oblivious to any sources of media so far (how is that even possible?) here’s the whole truth and nothing but the truth: on May 9th from 12–10pm, the Refugium Beelitz is hosting the festival „Spargel International“ together with the fabulous Contemporary Food Lab that created an exceptional food concept. A whole day of exploring the grounds, snacking on creative asparagus variations and watching international chefs from Peru, France, South Korea, Syria and Iran – all of them having started a new life in Germany – prepare their own traditional dishes with Germany’s favourite vegetable. This will also mark the new beginning for the Beelitz hideaway before renovation and reconstruction work for 50 apartments and studios start this summer. There’ll be music from Apples in Space, currently on tour with Element of Crime, DJ Bonnie will be spinning the decks and the farmers’ market is offering regional products like honey and jam. To keep the number of participants under control and make sure everything runs smoothly, a total of 5.000 tickets will be available via the Eventbrite ticketing platform, each ticket costing 7 euro (including 5 euro vouchers for food and drinks, the other 2 euro go towards all the helping hands and additional parking spaces). Access to the grounds will only be granted with a valid ticket – first come, first serve! The first lot of tickets was already sold out after only a short time, but there’ll be more tickets on sale every Wednesday (THAT’S TODAY!) at 6 pm. Don’t forget to set your alarm! We’re very excited and looking forward to enjoying a lovely day out in the countryside with as many of you as possible!  The „Spargel Countdown“ has started.

We have Exit!

We have exit.

“Excuse me, where is the exit?” No one knows. No one will say. And on top of all that all doors are locked and there’s no sign of how you actually got in here in the first place. Or is there? Live escape games originated in Japan and are the real-life equivalent to computer strategy games. The basic procedure is always the same: Along with a couple of other players you’ll find yourself in a seemingly hopeless scenario and your only way out is by solving the mystery through teamwork: Read clues and make the right decisions together and escape from the dungeons step by step. There’ll be locks to pick and the occasional arachnid falling from the ceiling – your only real enemy (apart from claustrophobia) being the relentless ticking of the clock. After 66 minutes, it strikes zero. In the end you’ll have had some fun, strengthened the team spirit and trained your brain a bit. Germany’s largest live-escape-game-playground EXIT Berlin has recently opened on the grounds of a former East German bomb shelter near the Alexanderplatz. On an underground surface of 350 square metres, up to 35 gamers can play in four different missions, trying to get out unscathed. The secret to success is teamwork – the lone wolf doesn’t stand a chance – so it’s an ideal game for team building events and company parties. The elaborately staged set-ups with lots of clever details guarantee a real thrill and will surely get your adrenalin flowing; solving the mysteries requires creativity, skill and an alert mind. A game master will be watching your every move on video and will give you some (cryptic) advice, in case you lose your bearings. Granted, we had our reservations initially. Computer games, role play, mystery missions? Come on… And then we ended up in the “Madhouse”, an abandoned mental institution, with a lunatic chasing us. Welcome to SAW. But it took less than 30 seconds for us to be fascinated by the game and soon we were opening cabinets, rummaging through belongings and ransacking blood stained lab coats. Exactly 60 minutes and 13 seconds later we were free. What happened in the meantime? Well, we’d rather not say. Only this much: Brain workout? Check! Team spirit? Check! Loads of fun? Double check!

Big Linda

mmw_dickeLinda

Big Linda

‚Die Dicke Linda‘ is small and round and has a rich yellow tinge. Linda is Germany’s most popular potato variety and was even awarded “Best Potato of the Year” in 2007. Die Dicke Linda is also the name of the new weekly farmer’s market that offers produce from Brandenburg’s fields and flowerbeds and local manufacturers. Starting this Saturday, and then every first and third Saturday of the month, the Kranoldplatz – a rather unimpressive square in the midst of boomtown Neukölln – is brought to life with bustling stalls offering food galore: fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers, homemade jams, freshly baked bread and cakes, coffee and wine, game and cut meats from Brandenburg, fresh fish from the Scharmützelsee and loads of delicious snacks to polish off on the spot. Die Dicke Linda already took place three times last year. It was so successful, it earned its weekly slot, initiated and organized by Theresa Dühn. The 32-year-old lives just around the corner and strives to bring healthy, seasonal and handmade products to the neighbourhood. Wanting to create a meeting place to enjoy coffee breaks and lunch, she even asked neighbours about their wishes and ideas. They’re all very excited about having their own market again. So are we. And so be it. P.S. Make sure you meet Biobauer Klaus!

Voodoo Voodoo

Voodoo Voodoo

If muxmäuschenwild were to open a shop, this is what it would be like: presenting and selling lovely pieces handmade with dedication by talented international designers based in Berlin – carefully selected and arranged perfectly to our liking. „Slow shopping“ is the name of the game. It wouldn’t be all about the money – we’d want to get to know the people behind the products, exchange ideas and promote sustainable shopping experiences. Tomorrow night, berlinoise couple Oryanne & Raphael open their shop „Un Autre Voodoo“. And what can we say: their shop IS exactly like that. After launching their magical pop-up shop in December, they’re now ready to grow roots in Berlin Neukölln. The address is fixed, designers and collections will change and what’s gone is gone. Come to the opening party and meet the 25 young designers, have a couple of cool drinks and enjoy some good music. Oryanne and Raphael will be there, too, of course. Maybe we can persuade our soul mates to put a muxmäuschenwild sticker on the door. Officially recommended, loved and covered with frosting by muxmäuschenwild or something like that.

The Craft and the Spirits

The Craft and the Spirits

In clarity lies strength. Vodka and such are slowly but surely shaking off the bad rep of just being the hard stuff for cocktails. The cheaper the booze, the sweeter the taste – that’s no longer the way to go. As with food, beer and whatever else ends up on our tables, more and more consumers and producers are getting back to basics by appreciating genuine, pure and high quality alcohols and good spirits. Fräulein Brösel, for example, sweetly finishes off any dinner with her hazelnut and fruit brandies distilled in Berlin Neukölln. The craft movement is clearly experiencing a boom – new distillates, brands and manufacturers are popping up on the map of ardent spirits almost daily, covering a range from absinth and brandy to vodka and whiskey to rum, gin, mezcal and pastis, the motto here being quality rather than quantity. Alcohol in moderation: enjoying a drink instead of guzzling it down. This weekend, together with co-organizers and liquor experts Dr. Kochan and Theo Ligithart, the creators of Markthalle Neun invite you to the 4th Craft Spirits Festival Destille Berlin held in the warehouse of the Heeresbäckerei. On an area of 750m2, connoisseurs, enthusiasts and spirit seekers can discover up to 500 top-notch spirit specialities from 50 German and international exhibitors. Due to artisan skills and substantial quality, the use of natural and regional ingredients and the small structures, both manufacturers and their products meet with the Slow Food criteria. Thus, this event is designed in line with the ideas of Markthalle Neun as an alternative to industrial mass production and offers genuine craft spirits from around the world for a relatively small amount of money. During numerous presentations, interested novices may gain a profound insight into the world of firewater. Handcrafted quality can be savoured at free tastings and at the Craft Spirit Bar, so be sure to line your stomach! You could conveniently stop by the Naschmarkt (Easter candy market) at Markthalle Neun just around the corner… During distilling demonstrations, you can also watch how fruit brandy is made. On Saturday evening, the best spirits from three categories will receive the “Craft Spirits Award 2015”. Enjoy in moderation.
