Who we are

Who we are

„I am one man among seven billion others. For the past 40 years, I have been photographing our planet and its human diversity, and I have the feeling that humanity is not making any progress. We are still incapable of living together. Why? I didn’t look for an answer in statistics or analysis, but in man himself. Today, it is in eyes, in faces and in words that I see a forceful means of reflecting the human soul.“ Yann Arthus-Bertrand, renowned photographer and director, is driven by the question of what it really means to be human. A unique combination of testimonies and self-reflection, the documentary “Human” analyses the lives of people on our planet that have been torn apart by wars and conflicts and at the same time maintained by empathy and solidarity. For three years, Yann Arthus-Bertrand travelled the world to interview over 2000 people in 70 countries and to photograph their environments. The interviews are complemented by contributions from journalists and human rights activists. HUMAN is a powerful portrait of mankind that reflects on topics such as women, justice, tolerance, poverty, war and happiness from different perspectives and reveals the differences and similarities that lie in the unknown and ultimately in our own self. A film intended to be seen by the world. The GoodPlanet foundation, initiated by Arthus-Bertrand, is committed to making this film accessible to as many people as possible. It’s being screened in cinemas, schools, the Internet and even at the UN General Assembly. All three parts of the documentary are available for free and in full HD on the YOUTUBE channel. What makes us human beings? What defines humanity? How do we become who we are? How much of us is part of seven billion others?

Blaze of Glory

Blaze of Glory

Gloria is a beautiful name. It is also the Latin word for glory and honour. It’s a biblical term, too, and stands for the Glory of God. These 6 internationally comprehensible letters are obviously of quite some importance and have inspired a number of musicians to write their personal hymn in honour of this mysterious Beauty. Bruce Springsteen has done it. And so have Patti Smith, Them, U2 and many more. It’s hard to believe that no one had the idea to name a band after her before now. Two German guys just wanted to make some music, got together, started a band and called it Gloria. One of them is Mark, the former bass player of “Wir sind Helden”. The other one is Klaas, the offspring of a German hairdressing dynasty and currently Germany’s most cunning entertainer. Together, the two of them make mellow, genuine and actually really good German Pop. At the moment, Gloria are on tour promoting their second album “Geister” and will be playing at the Astra Kulturhaus in Berlin on Sunday. Their concert on October 24th at the Grünspan in Hamburg was sold out so quickly they decided to ad another gig to their tour for the next day at Übel und Gefährlich. Get your tickets here Or send an email titled “Heilige und Hunde” to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de – we’re giving away a pair of guest list tickets for the Hamburg show on October 25th.

Any plans for tonight?

Any plans for tonight?

The other day, we went out for a drink and we’ve been reminiscing ever since. It was one of those perfect nights. Great company, good drinks, rosemary popcorn and an atmosphere making you forget time and space. It seems as if The SCHWELGEREI at Sanderstraße has always been there. But in fact the bar with an exquisite choice of long drinks, craft beers and selected wines has only been around since April. A lot has happened since then: many legendary evenings of sophisticated boozing and a few regular and very special yet quite unusual tastings. Starting at 8 pm tonight, the Schwelgerei is taking things a step further in just the right direction. Food Journalist Peter Eichhorn is hosting the first Beer & Cheese Tasting. Pale, dark, mild, full-flavoured or malty – 5 beer specialities are paired with 5 different delicious cheeses provided by Fritz Blomeyer. Beer and Cheese? Yes, please! Book your seat for a mere 30 Euros and enjoy an evening of interesting flavours and anecdotes that will leave you blissfully merry and your tummies filled. We’ve reserved two seats at the table for the most adventurous taste buds. Quickly send an email titled ‚CHEESE AND BEER WILL MAKE YOU CHEER‘ to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de. Chin-chin!

A room with a view

MMW_Vacancy

A room with a view

An abandoned hotel in the middle of the city – completely empty and gutted. 33 rooms stripped down to the core. Come on Berlin, show us some magic! In collaboration with ZEIT Magazin, GALERIE CRONE has invited 33 international emerging artists to present their work on a total of 5 floors and turn “The Vacancy” into a 1,400-sqm art exhibition before expansion and rebuilding begin. Temporary space at its best! The participating artists each have their individual approach to the still existing architecture and the interim presentation. Their artistic media include paintings, sculptures, photographs, video art, installations or live performances and their work explicitly corresponds with its surroundings and the temporary state of the building. The folks from Parker Bowles and Prince Charles have also set up shop and are serving drinks and little snacks. The Vacancy has been opening its doors since October 1st and the exhibition is only on show until next Monday. So if you haven’t made it there yet, we highly recommend to pay a visit to Friedrichstr.124 as fast as you can.

A matter of heart

A matter of heart

The heart is pretty much a universal symbol for and love affection – globally and unmistakeably. And even if there should a society where it’s not, it seems pretty great and almost ironic that this little symbol has become part of universal understanding. And as far as we know, there is no general symbol for war and hatred. After 15 years of development work, Catrina Occhio felt the need to do something more. She started a project called SeeMe, which supports the production and distribution of luxury products with fair and long-term working conditions as well as a genuine concept of charity. Aid is not the main focus, but much rather enabling the socially underprivileged to lead a free and self-determined life. Carina founded the jewelry label not only to offer consolation and support, but also to help especially women in North Africa and the Middle East to start a new life driven by courage and filled with new perspectives. Her message is quite simple: Replace violence with love! The heart symbol is the main element in all her creations. What might fade quickly or seem cheesy to some, becomes a powerful message based on its background. Working under fair conditions and using traditional methods, each woman puts part of her life (and personal history of suffering) into each piece of jewelry she creates while working under fair conditions and using traditional techniques. The heart symbol no longer merely stands for affection, it also claims that love is greater than hate, violence and revenge. That is something extremely powerful. The jewelry pieces themselves become symbols to be worn with pride. They come in all sorts of different sizes and variations. View the full collection here. #heartmovement

OHO!

OHO!

In recent years, hardly any artistic genre has evolved as much as photography. The boundaries between reality and illusion are as blurred as ever, icons come and go within a blink of an eye, and minor changes in history are lost in the endless stream of pictures. The intense process of artistic exploration often only starts after creating the image – in front of the computer, on a smartphone or within community consensus. But what actually defines a good picture? What distinguishes a good picture from one that is excellent? Having smartphone with an abundance of filters doesn’t necessarily make you a good photographer. Photography is a skill that requires inspiration, intuition, experience and the determination to share your point of view on the world – without being governed by the daily rhythm of blog rolls. Like every form of art, photography is about revealing a piece of yourself. Something that is so easily hidden behind foodporn, duck face and I-have-the-prefect-life selfies. That is essential the difference. Over the past years, the Ostkreuzschule has turned into talent factory spawning the best young photographers in Berlin. Ostkreuz-students are highly regarded worldwide. They have everything mentioned above. During their training, they have mastered their skills setting no limits to their artistic creation. They were able to make experiences and – above all –they were encouraged to find their own ways of expression. Starting October 10th, the graduate class will be presenting their work in a two-week exhibition at HO Berlin. Ostkreuz + HO = OHO. Oho! The vernissage will take place this Friday starting 7pm (free admission). More events such as a book launch and a panel discussion are to follow throughout the exhibition. See oho-oks.de for the full program. Go and get inspired. We need more pictures!

Our dear Julia interviewed for EDITION F

 MMW_EditionF

Our dear Julia interviewed for EDITION F

We love Edition F! Susann and Nora have created a platform based on contemporary female self-understanding – free of feminist debates or gender discussions. EDITION F is a site for opinions on economy, politics, careers and society – from a woman’s point of view. Full stop. Its aim is to create a dialogue with relevant content concerning real people and exciting projects. Of course, we were all the more happy (and quite proud) that our very own Julia was recently interviewed. Check out editionf.com/Julia-Kopper and read all about two years of muxmäuschenwild, networking and the need to occasionally take a break. Thank you Silvia, thank you EDITION F!  #girlpower

The Scent

MMW_WOODS

The Scent

Every few years, something completely and utterly cool hits the market. Something so different and special that you just have to have it. A game changer so to speak. Our favourite dudes from Brooklyn Soap Company in Hamburg have revolutionised men’s care in our neck of the woods with their natural grooming products. Plus, they put all their heart in it and did it in style. All products – whether beard care products, shampoos, grooming clay or body wash – are free of bullshit ingredients and smell wonderfully manly. Each one offers a different little journey into the land of herbal scents. But what scent brings everything Brooklyn Soap Company stands for together and sums it up in one little bottle? For their first very own fragrance they put their noses together with perfumer Mark Buxton and came up with the ultimate olfactory expression of new urban masculinity. Elegant and woody – with aromas of mandarin orange, nutmeg, absinthe, myrrh, amber and musk it spreads a hypnotizing fresh and spicy-floral scent. Instead of smothering you in a heavy cloud of essences, it surrounds you with an almost magical aura. Or to put it in Mark Buxton’s words: „It’s a fresh, spicy, floral, woody, musky fragrance!“ The bottle is entirely made of birch wood. The name „The woods“ is a tribute to the eponymous bar in Brooklyn, a place the dudes would often meet during the first chapter of founding Brooklyn Soap Company. The 50ml bottle of Eau de Perfume costs 69 Euro and can be pre-ordered at http://bklynsoap.com/de/the-woods/, orders will be shipped mid October. We got hold of one the very first bottles and are giving it away to the most dapper chap around. Send an email titled MY NECK OF THE WOODS to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de. Oh, and needless to say and just like all other Brooklyn Soap products, The Woods is made of all natural ingredients. A new kind of manliness we love.

Larger than life

Larger than life

Anton Corbijn creates icons. He is considered the „house“ photographer of bands such as U2 and Depeche Mode and famously created alluring monochrome images of heroes larger than life. Somehow the quiet Dutchman has a soft spot for these figures drawn by harsh light and shadows. Not only in his photographs but also in moving pictures, the artist repeatedly comes close to the little things in the lives of the Great. For example, he created a cinematic monument portraying the life of Joy Division’s singer Ian Curtis, which seems to represent the final act in the work of the singer who committed suicide so long ago. His latest work is dedicated to the greatest poster boy of all time. It tells the story about the relationship between young celebrity photographer Dennis Stock and fast rising star James Dean. On a trip to Dean’s home, Stock takes some of the most iconic shots that will later manifest the glory of the actor who is fatally injured only shortly after. Corbijn’s approach is as simple as it is ingenious. The dramatic plot is narrowed down to a point to where you feel you’re actually turning the pages of a book and not seeing 24 or more frames per second flash past your eyes. Don’t get me wrong – it is far from static. Corbijn has discovered motion and has grown to love it. And he’s always had an eye for composition anyway. This is definitely a must-see.
