Philipp Westermeyer

The 2 Minute Interview

Philipp Westermeyer is a Rockstar. And he belongs to the family, in every way. He would probably describe himself as an entrepreneur from Hamburg and a man of action in media and marketing. We could leave it at that. One could, of course, mention that he created one of the most important platforms for media and digital marketing there is: Online Marketing Rockstars. That his festivals, like the Online Marketing Rockstars Festivals 2017 coming up on March 2nd and 3rd, belong to the greatest and most inspiring formats you can and should visit in Germany. That not only is he incredibly clever and fast when asking the right questions, but he knows how to answer them gracefully and honestly, as our little interview shows. That he, as father of twins, also functions in double player mode in private. As we said, one could mention all that. Or we can just let him speak for himself. Here, down below or via the Online Marketing Rockstars Podcast. Because you can listen to that for free at iTunes and Soundcloud. P.S. If you want to give Philipp cordless ear phones now (see below), please make sure to coordinate that with all other possible candidates. Otherwise he’ll end up with three pairs.

Define ‚Rockstar‘!
Someone who does things differently than most others would. Sometimes because he has talent, sometimes because he has ambition, sometimes because he has neuroses, whatever.

Which moment changed everything?
Back in the day when I used to drive to the station with my father to buy magazines. That’s when ‚Media and Marketing‘ became my thing.

What is the biggest problem of your generation?
Difficult, perhaps political disillusionment.

What will change in digital marketing in 2017?
Hopefully more advertising in podcasts, in our own at best… probably joined by a better understanding of content marketing, everyone is trying out and learning there at the moment.

Do you prefer being host or participant?
Both, I do enjoy being host but I also really like going to events.

Which company would you have liked to have founded?
Very many… From the big film studios in the US to modern companies like Xing. Many things about the interface between media, entertainment, networking and marketing are exciting. I like observing US entrepreneurs that aren’t that well known here yet, for example Peter Guber.

What can we twist you around our finger with?
Good content, no matter the topic.

What would you do without the internet?
Probably newspaper and magazine business. Classical media, I guess…

Which superpower would you like to have?
I’ve never thought about that, but if there’s something I can help people with or make the world a better place, I’ll take that.

What’s your desktop background on your computer at the moment?
Black with lots and lots of files on it…

Oh and, PC or Apple? Or does one just ask Android or iOS now?
I came to Apple about two years ago.

Do you have any ideas for presents?
Tickets for the OMR 2017 for business partners maybe? ;) Personally, I would like some cordless earphones with a microphone, probably quite popular at the moment.

What would you cook for us if we came to visit you at home?
I’d order something at my favourite Korean restaurant.

When was the last time you tried something new and what was it?
I try new things in sports all the time. I’m trying to learn a handstand, for example, but for at least 12 months now. I learnt to jump rope in the last months as well, definitely easier…

What would you change if you had the power to?
Probably something to do with the communication between cultures or environmental issues. Luckily, I’m very content with my own life, so it would be a greater topic.

What should no one know about you?
There are many people in Hamburg that believe I used to be a good football player once, because I’m okay at indoor football… Let’s just say they shouldn’t talk to my old friends from home about that.

What question should we have asked?
I like thinking about the future of marketing and media, you were a bit coy there.

Last words:
„Seize the day and enjoy life!“ So banal, but still, it can’t do any harm. :)

Happenpappen

If the thought of sweet potato pineapple curry, spicy fried noodles with cabbage peanut salad and chop suey vegetables or a seitan-patty burger with Fritz Cola sauce, cheese dip, tomatoes and roasted onions not only makes your mouth water but your heart beat faster, too – then you’re in vegan-love. Just like Cathy, owner of the vegan living kitchen Happenpappen in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel. Homemade vegan specialties are served here daily, plus gluten-free options that even make convinced carnivores gush! Monday to Sundays from 6pm is burger night with no less than 5 different vegan burger variations. No evangelism going on here, just cooking with a lot of enthusiasm for alternatives, a vast knowledge about the world of culinary diversity and the patience and wisdom needed to give the guests an understanding of vegan cuisine, if they so wish. The recipe here is 100 % vegan = 200% yummy! Deal!

Relax for a sip

MMW_YWK

We’re spending the weekend in Hamburg and are incredibly excited about the Altonale. And into the bargain, we’re going to be serving drinks at the bar of the Yoga.Wasser.Klang *Cittá slow-out festival on the Christianswiese. On the most relaxed spot between great yoga providers and sizzling food trucks we going to be cooling a great variety of drinks. Our flamingo Steve is already packed and, we just can’t help ourselves, we’re setting up a beautifully decorated photo booth next to the stage. Before, after and during all this, three yoga-meadows invite you to practise, exercise and relax, meditate and enjoy a massage to laid-back sounds, listen to the live acts and DJs, fill your tummies at the food market, drum around on water singing bowls and much more. Entrance is free of charge, admittance to yoga is with a ticket. Come see us, laugh with us, drink with us and take a picture. We look forward to seeing you and enjoying a fantastically relaxed weekend.

Claudia Fischer-Appelt

MMW_Claudia

The 2 Minute Interview

When Claudia Fischer-Appelt has a creative black out and needs fresh ideas, she has a cold shower and plays a round of skat. No hang on, she goes for a run along the Schlei, fights off giant ducks with a piece of chocolate and then goes and has a drink with them. God help us! We’re lost and highly recommend you read for yourself what one of Germany’s most creative women has in store and to say – to her 18-year old self, about perfect parents and about Karl Anders. That’s the name of her new agency, her “circle of power”, with which she indulges in only taking on meaningful projects that are, above all, fun! „The Brain Runs on Fun“ is her motto and you really can tell. Last weekend, we finally met in person. She was one of the jurors at our Berlin fashion Film Festival. And we promised her that we would in no way whatsoever mention her bank apprenticeship.

Name: Claudia Fischer-Appelt
Age: 39 for ever
Home: Hamburg
Profession: Designer
Show size: 36
Favourite brand: Henrik Vibskov
Contact:claudia@karlanders.de

Why is Karl different?
Karl says what he thinks, takes a risk here and there and always has a clear opinion. And he wants to keep on doing things for the first time.

The best advert of the last 12 months:
Can we agree on the best design? Then there is one clear favourite for me: The corporate identity for the NRW Forum by Kessels Kramer from Amsterdam. Brave appearance, excellent graphic design, good humour. An awesome implementation of the idea of the imperfect, fluid, variable… simply great!

Are there perfect parents?
In my opinion, there are always parents who want to be perfect. That’s why I used to encourage those kind of parents to be a little more relaxed. Nowadays I answer with
Nam June Paik: „When too perfect lieber Gott böse“.

You meet your 18-year-old self. Which advice would you give yourself?
Take your pleasure more seriously!

Which problem would you like to solve?
I get so annoyed when the old go on and on nagging about the young, I’d like to solve that!

Your missing a bright idea – what do you do?
A run. Some Chocolate. A drink. In that order.

Who do you admire?
People who form something incredibly creative and keep on re-inventing themselves, like Marina Abramovic, for example.

Tell us a magical place, anywhere in the world:
There’s a running track alongside the River Schlei by Riesby: Through the forest along the water. It feels like running through a fairy tale.

What are you no good at?
I’m really bad at remembering names. Horrible. But I can remember a face for the rest of my life!

Which piece of art would you like to own?
A light box from Thomas Hirschhorn, the one with the taped-on shoulders.

Would you rather fight a duck the size of a horse or a hundred horses the size of a duck? Awesome question, I had to give that a good think and check my fighting techniques. I think I would take on the giant horse-duck, piece of cake!

What would you cook for us if we came to visit you?
Oh dear, I can’t cook at all. With the exception of simple children’s meals I have never been able to achieve anything in that area, just the shopping already gets me in knots. But because I really love eating really well, I would order Japanese for us.

What are you afraid of?
Something happening to my kids.

When was last time you tried something new and what was it?
I like trying new things as long as it’s not bungee jumping or something like that. I tried surfing in March. And playing Skat, but that drove me crazy – so I don’t think I’ll be doing that again. I wanted to try having a cold shower every morning, but under the shower I remembered I’d already tried it and it just wasn’t for me.

What should no one know about you?
Somebody already spilled the beans on my bank apprenticeship recently. I’m not telling any more secrets :)

Which question should we have asked?
The one about my favourite band.

Last words:
The brain runs on fun.

Pump at will!

Pump at will!

So… Feeling fit? We might have a little something for you. On April 24th, our friends from HEJ Nutrition and FIT.TRIO are holding their „Be Great Boot Camp“ in the Weidesporthalle in Hamburg. You can spend one whole day sweating, chatting, fighting and slimming with Germany’s most popular and successful (and rightly so) fitness couple. This comes with music, delicious snacks – from green to high protein – and heaps of good vibes. Up to 400 boys and girls are invited to roll out their mats on the brand new floor and let Jan and Louisa push them through a varied full body workout aimed at improving strength and endurance. In several sessions, all the major muscle groups are toned with squats, lunges, stretches, back exercises, HIIT workout, ab workout and whatever else there is. Whether you’re a pro or an absolute beginner is totally irrelevant, because each participant will reach his or her individual limit and emerge fitter than before. The breaks are filled with side events and there are challenges, food stalls and all kinds of new and useful stuff waiting to be tried out. Doors open at 9.30 a.m. and then it’s full throttle from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a lunch break in between. Tickets are available for 29€ in advance sale here or for 39€ on site. We’ll be joining in – the gym shirt is ready to go. Can’t wait for the fun to begin!

Bzzzzzzzzzz

Bzzzzzzzzzz

Did you know that bees are the most important farm animals next to cattle and pigs? We didn’t either. But Ann and Julia Böning from Hamburg sure do. The two of them love bees and are aware of their importance in our ecosystem. Keeping Albert Einstein’s analogy in mind (no more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man), they founded the urban honey farm Golden Girls Honey on the rooftop of their post production company Fotomaki Retouching – and there’s been quite a buzz ever since. Ann and Julia trained as beekeepers and now are fighting proactively against death and extinction of bees. That way they get a break from their otherwise rather digital daily retouch routines and can enjoy their love for nature and simultaneously contribute to a sustainable future. At the end of hard work stand wonderful and very tangible products indeed: smooth and creamy honey, well tolerated beeswax, and – to spread their idea – the Golden Girls also sell bee-friendly seeds. The great thing about bees is that they not only ensure our survival, they also make our lives a lot more colourful. As long as provide a habitat for them, they can keep providing us with flowers and herbs for cooking. Pretty good deal, don’t you think?

Elegantly wasted

Elegantly wasted

Fancy turning your life upside down. Ditch the excess baggage, refrain from all unnecessary things, maybe even radically become part of the »100 Things Challenge«. Which objects would survive your ultimate clear-out? On the one hand you’d probably have personal things and memorabilia like your first record, your ex-boyfriends t-shirt or your diaries. On the other hand there would be all those things that we hold in our hands everyday, things that have become so indispensable throughout our daily life and at the same time so trivial and self-evident that we hardly take notice of them anymore. All those things that simplify our life, things that are just there, living in everyone’s drawers because we couldn’t imagine mastering modern life without them. All of them being objects of anonymous everyday design that is not featured on design blogs or hyped in glossy magazines. The exhibition „No Name Design” at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg finally brings exactly these objects into focus. We all use things like scissors, gloves and measuring instruments yet we rarely know who invented or designed them. But in this almost immeasurable chamber of curiosities of product design we can learn about them. The exhibition is curated by Swiss product designer and teacher Franco Clivio, who has been collecting items since he “has had trouser pockets“, as he says – functional items perfectly constructed, innovatively simple and with integrated intelligence.

The Wood is on fire

The wood is on fire

Today is the day. Our friends from the BRKLYN SOAP COMPANY are lifting the veil and finally letting out the genie with a bang while they lift the lid off of their incredible and wonderful birch wood bottle for the very first time. “The Woods” was created by star perfumer Mark Buxton, the nose behind many of the most iconic creations of international luxury perfume houses. The fragrance is a tribute to urban masculinity and its infatuating composition that is subtle yet irresistible will have you rip off your clothes as soon as… er, sorry that’s a whole different story! Damn, this stuff smells good! We’ve had some samples flying around the office for the past few weeks and we keep inhaling the hypnotising scent of mandarin orange, nutmeg, absinthe, myrrh, amber and musk every chance we get. Anyway, tonight, BRKLYN SOAP is now officially celebrating the release of their very own fragrance at the ISLAND in Hamburg’s Banksstraße. The guest list is long – with good reason. Besides the official perfume release and vernissage by photographer Tristan Rösler who created the outstanding lookbook for the fragrance, Jasper & Uhlig will be playing a live set before DJs &Moe and Harmony hit the decks later on. The Dapper Dudes themselves will be there, too, of course. Folks, this is going to be a night to remember. Admission is free – drinks and snacks included. Oh, and if you’re worried you might miss out, you can get your hands on the new fragrance here before it’s sold out. Bring your friends, make some more and enjoy!

Jannes Vahl

MMW_JannesVahl

Jannes Vahl

The 2 minutes-Interview

Jannes Vahl is half from Oldenburg and half from Hamburg. The latter is where he put up shop two days after finishing school. Good for him, and good for Hamburg! After writing an incredible number of almost exactly 2,300 articles as an intern, trainee, freelance editor and editor-in-chief, posing for nude photos for freenet and his training as managing assistant in advertising, he and his best friend Joko founded an advertising company and probably the greatest charity project ever: clubkinder e.V. The association organizes unusual fundraising events to help fight social problems in Hamburg. Their newest project is Help Here e.V. Read what Jannes has to say about, life, love, rock ’n’ roll, super powers and dealing with tamed giant ducks. #theworldneedsmorejannes

Name: Jannes Vahl

Age: 34

City: Hamburg

Job: manager of Polycore advertising agency / head of clubkinder e.V.

Shoe size: 44 2/3 (fairtrade Chucks)

Favourite album: many, but if I had to choose: „Ten“ by Pearl Jam

Contact: Yes, please.

jannes.vahl@polycore-agentur.de

Do you live in the right city?

Definitely. I like being in Vancouver, New York or Berlin once in a while. But my life is here.

What was the last thing that really moved you?

All of our charity projects. Otherwise we would not choose them.

Something you definitely want to accomplish in life?

Live. And maybe one of these days, have the feeling that humans are not the dumbest of all species.

Truth be told, what would you have never done without alcohol?

Luckily, there is an endless list of things: Meeting some of the best people, certain decisions and experiences would never have happened without Truth or Dare, night swimming or Rum and Coke.

If you were allowed one sin, which forbidden thing would you do?

Blow up the entire BILD publishing company. Erase all of its traces. While all the “editors” are at the Christmas party.

Did you do all of the things you wanted to in your youth?

None of them. Except for meeting Malte, Stefan and Joko. I never did drugs and didn’t have sex until the tender age of 19.

If not, what’s stopping you now?

I have a sex life. I’m still not really interested in drugs. So nothing is really stopping me. I find that some of the things that were big in the nineties actually were really good: youth, free time, fountain pens and values, for example.

How can someone wrap you around his or her finger?

With concert tickets, movie nights and social intelligence.

Which book, film and record should everyone have read, seen and listened to?

To each their own. But maybe something by Rocko Schamoni, Into the Wild, Lateralus and Nirvana »Live at Reading«

Which super power would you like to have?

I already have it.

Would you rather fight a duck as big as a horse, or a hundred horses as small as ducks?

The duck! I would tame it straight away – it can fly, run AND swim. Battlecat deluxe!

What would you cook for us if we visited you at home?

Sugar for absinthe.

What are you afraid of?

I’m not really afraid of anything, but the stupidity of some people is awful.

When did you last try something new and what was it?

On Tuesday. Number 19 on the menu of my favourite Asian restaurant.

What should no one know about you?

That I always liked Scotty Pippen just a little more than Jordan. How little rent I pay. Who I’m secretly in love with.

Which question should we have asked?

Who I’m secretly in love with.

Blaze of Glory

Blaze of Glory

Gloria is a beautiful name. It is also the Latin word for glory and honour. It’s a biblical term, too, and stands for the Glory of God. These 6 internationally comprehensible letters are obviously of quite some importance and have inspired a number of musicians to write their personal hymn in honour of this mysterious Beauty. Bruce Springsteen has done it. And so have Patti Smith, Them, U2 and many more. It’s hard to believe that no one had the idea to name a band after her before now. Two German guys just wanted to make some music, got together, started a band and called it Gloria. One of them is Mark, the former bass player of “Wir sind Helden”. The other one is Klaas, the offspring of a German hairdressing dynasty and currently Germany’s most cunning entertainer. Together, the two of them make mellow, genuine and actually really good German Pop. At the moment, Gloria are on tour promoting their second album “Geister” and will be playing at the Astra Kulturhaus in Berlin on Sunday. Their concert on October 24th at the Grünspan in Hamburg was sold out so quickly they decided to ad another gig to their tour for the next day at Übel und Gefährlich. Get your tickets here Or send an email titled “Heilige und Hunde” to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de – we’re giving away a pair of guest list tickets for the Hamburg show on October 25th.
