The first few days in a new city are always special: new people, new streets, new buildings, new places and new paths to follow. A completely new view from a new window, different light, exotic scents, and strange noises – all of these new impressions leave their marks. Unknown places can be a great source of inspiration and can create new images – either in our heads or even quite specific ones in form of art. Especially artists can feel a great boost to their creativity in the right surroundings. Ralf Dereich, an artist based in Berlin, is well aware of this fact. The vibrant painter enjoys working in places with an unexplored atmosphere, but untouched places aren’t easy to find (or use) – especially if you’re not looking for an airbnb flat for an in-between stay, but instead need a studio to write, paint, doodle, scream or do anything else really. Hotel rooms or normal apartments just aren’t the ideal place for creative work, are they? So, together with his school friend and marketing expert Melina Volkmann, Ralf decided to start the online platform stusu – a global network for subletting and renting artist’s studios, or, in other words: something like airbnb for artists. Creative minds can advertise or swap their studios sorted by cities and easily find a new and inspiring place to work in a new country, a new city or even just around the corner. That way, the term „artist studio“ shakes off its mythical and eremitic image to become a dynamic place for independent and flexible working. The platform offers an infrastructure from which wonderful art can develop – space, light and vision. After all, art is created by the world. And the world is everywhere. Right?!

Home is where the art is

They say that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. And when heart and mind of the beholder say it is art, it is. What we’re saying is that art is not only a playground for artists but also for those that want to engage in it. Observing art helps to develop new ideas, gain new perspectives and sharpen our senses. »100for10« is a wonderful project that was launched last year and offers affordable access to international art. 100for10 is a series of books featuring prints by contemporary artists coming from different artistic fields such as illustration, photography, graphics, fine arts and fashion. Each edition has 100 pages. Each edition costs 10 Euros. And no, we’re not talking about a cheap brochure that’ll end up in the bin, but we’re not promoting one of these boring glossy coffee table books either. The person behind this idea is none other than Lars Harmsen – a partner of the Munich based agency Melville, professor for typography and editorial design and director of »Slanted Publishers« – ensuring the quality of each and every print. So why do they only cost 10 Euros? Because each piece of art is printed in black and white and on demand only. 25 per cent of sales go directly to artists like the New York-based Thomas Lail who elaborately transforms photocopied and re-photocopied image-fragments into large-scaled collages that, in turn, tell new stories. On February 18th, the 100for10 collection will be on display when the sofa-specialists from Sitzfeldt open their new showroom in Munich’s Werksviertel. A perfect match: lounging around on comfy sofas, sipping on champagne and enjoying art. It doesn’t really get any better than that.

From Brooklyn with love

From Brooklyn with love

We’ve got mail. A letter sent from C.D. Hermelin in Brooklyn. The letter is typewriter-written on a single piece of paper and embellished with stamped hearts. It’s about the future and the present, about hopes and dreams, about a coincidental encounter. The last sentence reads “I think I’m good down here for a while“ – words spoken by the heroine of our little short story, but more about that later. The New York based author Christopher Hermelin writes „short stories for strangers“, calls himself the Roving Typist and travels around with a 10-dollar typewriter he bought at a flea market. Anyone can request their very own little story on the spot or sign-up for one on his website. Depending on the distance, it will take anything between seven minutes and a maximum of two weeks (shipping included) until you can enjoy your personal reading experience. It’s your choice to either give the author plenty of scope or give him detailed specifics concerning the plot – the more specific you are about the scenario, the more personal the story becomes. So far, Christopher has written more than 1200 stories for strangers – including a marriage proposal. Yes, these stories are the perfect gift for special people! 15 Euros is all Christopher asks for as compensation for his expenses. Anything beyond that is completely up to and what you feel your story is worth. Nina, the protagonist of our story, is currently doing an internship at this really fabulous agency in Berlin. Of course, the story doesn’t mention anything about how happy the agency is to have Nina on board. But that’s not what the story is about anyway – it’s about Nina. And a handsome stranger, the touch of his hand, a bird and heart-shaped clouds. ”I think I’m good down here for a while“. The End. Or maybe not…

The Führer wouldn’t like it

The Führer wouldn’t like it

Recently, we read this trivial post on Facebook: „When you are dead, you do not know you are dead. It’s only painful and difficult for others. The same applies when you are stupid.“ We’ll get straight to the point before this turns into a political debate. How the hell do you respond to stupidity, aggression, intolerance and incitement without descending into polemics and adding fuel to the fire? The fact is that butting out is not an option. Especially not, if people are calling out to harm others, because…well, why exactly? Holding a mirror in front of idiocy has always belonged to the repertoire of enlightenment and, in doing so, leave it to its own devices and set in motion processes that by argument alone would not be possible. If you can’t change the system, use it. And use it to change it. After the Democratic Culture Centre (Zentrum Demokratische Kultur) organised „Germany’s Most Involuntary Charity Run“ last year, when Neo-Nazis, whilst taking part in a Commemoration March, gave an involuntary donation of 10 Euros for every completed meter to „EXIT“ (a scheme to help people opt out of the Neo-Nazi scene) they started up the initiative „Hass hilft“ („Hate Helps“). The idea is simple but ingenious: for every racist or xenophobic remark or comment reported on Facebook or to the Police 1 Euro is donated to the refugee projects of Aktion Deutschland and EXIT Deutschland. That is: all malicious people who stir up hatred are in fact making a donation against themselves. A classic Catch-22, experts might say. Because either the online hate-campaigners stop making their comments, or money is donated to support projects fighting racial discrimination. The website www.hasshilft.de has all the information concerning this project, a Facebook-Banner to download, and a Top-Ten List of the most eager and industrious „Haters“ (sorry, „Donors“!). The money, by the way, is provided by the St. Pauli Football Club, Big FM Radio Station, Sky, frisch+fleisch and Facebook itself. We wish you all „Happy Hunting“ and reporting! #nopegida #refugeeswelcome

Good stuff

Fashion is like art: Sometimes you’ll need an explanation to make it work and sometimes it speaks for itself. If you’ve seen the timeless, beautiful and elegant, sustainable Japanese-style collection by UMASAN, there’s no need to say more. So, we’ll just skip all elaborate and voluptuous descriptions and get straight to the point. In the end, it all comes down to good material – plain and simple. The unique label only uses PETA-approved vegan materials that are manufactured in Japanese weaving mills and tailored in Germany. UMASAN exclusively processes fast growing natural raw materials (ha, that’s actually kind of funny, editor’s note). And that is not only good for our planet and generations to come, but also feels pretty damn good. Browse the flagship store at Linienstraße 140 or the Archive Store at Bikini Berlin and slip on a new skin. We sure feel as snug as a bug!

Refugees Welcome!

Refugees Welcome!

For weeks and months now, the influx of people seeking asylum and help at European boarders has been exceeding any conceivable measure. The media storm shows images of horror scenarios and horrible suffering as well as solidarity and a „Wilkommenskultur“ (welcome culture). Although the public debate is important and necessary, it sometimes fails to get to the core of the situation. This is no longer “refugee debate”; it’s about real people with real stories in desperate need of shelter and sanctuary. And we can give them both. We don’t have the right to look away and wait for the next media hype to take our mind off this pressing matter. The stream of refugees will not simply end. We need to provide solutions – on a large political scale as well as on a personal level. Thanks to exceptional commitment and extreme willingness to help, many new initiatives have developed in Germany to support refugees. But to provide support in an uncomplicated, non-bureaucratic and purposeful way, a strong network of volunteers and projects is required. Which help is useful? What things are needed most? When and where? What help is even possible? What if I have a room or an empty workshop or skills I could offer? How do I find out where help is needed? For the past couple of weeks, the Social Collective based in our co-working area has been considering exactly these questions. Together we tried to find solutions to make help more efficient. The Refugee Board is what we came up with: an online-platform that provides an overview of current projects, contacts, useful links and addresses concerning the “Arrival in Germany” and allows people seeking assistance and people wanting to help to connect as quickly as possible. The Board helps refugees, supporters and initiators alike to find offers tailor-made to their needs and ways to connect with each other. The beta-version is now online and currently allows projects and initiatives to put up a description of services. So, if you are part of an initiative or would like to offer help, go to www.refugeeborad.de and sign up. A simple input mask enables people seeking help to find exactly what they are looking for via app or web – in twelve languages and with current contacts details. I am a REFUGEE. I’m looking for a SPACE in BERLIN. The Refugee Board aims to draw together as many initiatives and offers as possible – in Berlin, Brandenburg and eventually throughout the whole of Germany. Spread the news! Furthermore, a meeting point will be created to give platform users, refugees and project initiators the chance to exchange experiences, improve solutions and continuously expand the Refugee Board. We’ll keep you posted! #refugeeswelcome #refugeeboard

Everyone matters.

Everyone matters.

What’s been happening off the coasts of the Fortress that is Europe is a tragedy and can’t be surpassed in terms of injustice and suffering. Nowhere else has the fragile imbalance of the world community become more obvious than along the refugee routes of the Mediterranean. Thousands of people are forced to flee due to poverty, hunger and persecution. Countless refugees end up losing their lives. Once the number of victims has reached an amount worth mentioning, as it has most recently, it causes a loud but brief outcry. Solutions hardly ever result from it. But every person matters. Nobody is more important than the other, just because they were born – by chance – on the other side of the ocean. When the CUCULA project started to engage in dialogue with refugees at the Oranienplatz, instead of either loudly demanding them to leave or fighting for their right to stay, it was more than just a step in the right direction: it was an effective and solution-oriented approach. CUCULA is a pilot project that has already supported five refugees in building their own professional future. Making and designing furniture, while incorporating fragments of their journey across the Mediterranean, such as wood planks from shipwrecks, the refugees are able to tell their story and have the opportunity to open up a perspective for a self-determined life. The proceeds from furniture sales are reinvested in educational programmes that will help pave the way for a long-term residence and work permit. This is how integration works. Another project that strives for a pragmatic and solution-oriented approach is Flüchtlinge Willkommen. While federal and state governments are still debating about accommodation costs for asylum seekers and fanatic criminals set fire to asylum homes, the Berlin project places refugees in shared flats or apartments without much ado. Everyone who has enough space can volunteer and accommodate one person or more in their home for a while. Flüchtlinge willkommen will connect you, organize the process and even help you re-finance „lost“ rent. Über den Tellerrand arranges culinary meetings for people with different backgrounds. An Afghan Night, a Nigerian cooking course – engaging in culinary dialogues, people and cultures come to together and help each other to escape stigmata. Involvement is the key – ignorance can often lead to intolerance. Go out and take a step forward. Get to know each other, commit yourself to a good cause and make the world a better place. These are all small projects and initiatives, but there are lots more. And they all have one thing in common: they’re providing solutions and putting things and us in motion.
