The 2 Minute Interview

Sway Clarke has Cuban-Jamaican roots, actually comes from Toronto but lives in Berlin. Which is good. Because that way, we get to enjoy his fabulous voice, which the press places somewhere between Lorde and Frank Ocean, much more often. How is that possible? For the New York Times, at least, he is the „next big thing“ – even though his first official EP ‚Bad Love‘ just came out. Well, we wanted to find out more and invited him over for some cross-examination. Which lead to a discussion of all kinds of topics, from colour-blindness to diarrhoea and toilets as a place to write. But whether Sway Clarke is actually his real name – we forgot to ask. Sounds like swag, definitely has swag. Cool dude! PS: yes, that really is his actual phone number further down. Give him a call!

Name: Sway Clarke
Age: 29

Toronto or Berlin?
Pretty hard to decide – but if I really had to choose it would be “The 6”! Sorry Berlin.

Do you have musical role-models?
Unfortunately, I don’t and I regret that a little. Sometimes, it takes much, much too long to find accords to my melody :(

Up late or up early?
Both…“I Don’t SLEEP Much“

How do you write music?
Mostly, I write on the toilet or in the bathroom. To me, the smallest room of the house is the most hallowed place on earth.

The famous island, one iPod, three songs. Which ones?
Stevie Wonder “As”
Radiohead “Climbing Up The Walls”
Kanye “Flashing Lights“

What is typical for you?
Muesli. I make my own muesli at home and eat it almost every day. On tour, too. Always.

What are you absolutely no good at?
Eating eggs and smoking pot. Totally useless.

Your favourite German word?
Flitzekacke (which is colloquial for diarrhoea). It was the first word I learnt at the Goethe Institute. It’s fun to pronounce.

Which event in your life has left the most lasting impression so far?
When my father left my family, that was a very dramatic moment of my life.

Which superpower would you like to have?
To read other peoples’ minds. But only, if I also have the power to turn it off again, too :)

Which artist would you really like to work with?
Stevie Wonder

What would you cook for us if we came to visit you at home?
Maybe Indian. I really love it and have lots of different curries at home. Or, if we’re having breakfast: muesli, of course!

What are you afraid of?
Eggs and pot.

When was the last time you tried something new for the first time and what was it?
Hand out my mobile number in an interview. When? Well technically, the moment you guys publish this interview! :)

What should no one know about you?
That I bite my nails.

Hendrik Otremba sings. Hendrik Otremba paints. And boy, does he! Both, we mean. And then he’s also a lecturer, works as a free-lance author, journalist, lector, songwriter and hosts his own radio show at BYTE.FM. Boy oh boy! His band Messer is well known in the indie world. His paintings caused a stir in the press, can be found on various album covers and grace many walls, for example those of the Galerie Jäger. André Hamann

The 2 Minute Interview

André Hamann is one of those guys you really should be jealous of. But you just can’t because not only is he brazenly handsome, talented in many ways and incredibly successful – to top it all off, he also manages to stay super nice, polite and humble through it all. He was discovered during his traineeship at H&M, made a career as a model, lived in Athens and Cape Town. Today, dear André has 1 million followers on Instagram (yes, that’s right: ONE MILLION!), his fashion label „Haze & Glory“ recently opened it’s first pop-up store at Bikini Berlin and right now, he’s launching his own fitness programme „Absolut André“ in New York. What, that’s all?! Nope. Last Thursday he made an appearance at Germany’s Next Top Model, where he introduced his new label and hand-picked some of the new faces for his show. This just sounds too perfect and gives us reason to launch a most thorough investigation. Seriously: where’s the catch?

Name: André Hamann

Shoe size: 43
Favourite label: Haze & Glory

We’ve got to ask: are you single?
Unfortunately, I’ve been single for six years. I’m still waiting for her.

What’s the first thing you do after waking up?
Turn on music, check emails, and enjoy a glass of lemon water.

Isn’t it really hard work to always stay in shape?
No, quite the opposite. You just have to be willing to change a few habits, eat the right food and do the really efficient workouts.

Model, designer, fitness guru, musician…could you please make up your mind!?
That’s exactly what I’ve decided on. Best of all: all these things enhance each other and are sources of inspiration… so, I never get bored.

How do you keep almost a million followers on instagram happy?
With a positive attitude that I try to pass on to people with my photos and messages.

Who is going to Germanys Next Top Model 2016?
I have no influence on that. ;) But I do have a favourite.

What are you proud of?
My family, my friends, and what I’ve managed to achieve by myself.

What are you no good at?
I’m never really mad at anyone.

Share a magical place anywhere in the world.
I did a lot of travelling over the past six years and was able to see wonderful places. The most beautiful was Cape Town. Because of the lovely weather and the ocean there is an awful lot that has a magical effect on me.

What song makes you cry?
If I cry, then only tears of joy. For example when hearing City & Colour’s „Against the grain“.

Which super power would you like to have?
I’ve always seen myself as Spiderman – he’s extraordinary and does good.

What would you cook for us if we visited you at home?
One of my 100 delicious AbsolutAndre recipes.

What are you afraid of?
Death.

What would you change if you had the power to?
No wars, no hunger, no envy!

What should no one know about you?
That I feel really lonely sometimes.

Which question should we have asked?
What exactly do you do to stay in shape?

Last Words:
Let’s go!

Cornerstone

Cornerstone

Benjamin Clementine is a genius, an elemental force of music, a revelation. We’ll just leave it at that for now. The young Englishman recently still earned his pay as a musician on the streets of Paris, and when he sings, it is with such passion and fervour, his voice leaving you completely spellbound and questioning everything you believed in just moments before. It’s distinctive, intense and always surprising. For weeks, we played his song Cornerstone (and watched the video) over and over again in our office. On December 12th, Benjamin Clementine will be playing at Hamburg’s Mojo, and on December 15th, he’ll be on stage at the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic. A passionate experience hard to beat. Tickets are 36 Euro each, both concerts start at 8pm. To mark the occasion – and out of sheer anticipation – we’re giving away a pair of tickets for both cities. Send an email titled ‚FROM THE EAST TO THE WEST‘ tohurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de and let us know which city you’re in. We’ll see you there.

Bonaparte

MMW_Bonaparte3

Bonaparte

The 2 Minute Interview

The term “life in the limelight” was born when Tobias Jundt aka Bonaparte founded the eponymous band in 2006. Anybody who has witnessed the wild bustle of Punk, costumes and masks, eloquence and lots of bare skin, knows what we are talking about. He answered our questions for this little intro as follows: Who are you? “Bonaparte, Emperor of the people and the hearts.“ Where do people know you from? “From radio and television and from the pub around the corner.” What do you do? “Right now, I am answering interview questions.” What else do you plan on doing? “Afterwards, I will eat a pineapple and write a hit song!” Well, we could finish right here – pretty much everything has been said. He’s genius and madness in one; he’s ironic and painfully honest (honest!) and very likeable of course. So, if we stopped right here you’d never find out about sex with a suckling pig in a sauna, the swing on a maple tree or the pink elephant. We highly recommend going to see one of Bonaparte’s gigs either in Hamburg or Berlin to anyone who is ready for more after reading all of this. We’re giving away guest list tickets for each gig. Send an email titled “ANTI ANTI!” to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de.

Name: Bonaparte
Age: unknown
Location: Berlin, Wellington, the world
Job: musician
Shoe size: 39.5
Favourite mask: mine
Contact: The moon, exit 2, third house on the left!
Describe yourself in three words.
Three third threesomes!

What is your Plan B?
Musicians always live their Plan B, because they’d have to finish school to have a Plan A.

Which concert will you never forget?
Oh… there are a few…I often like to remember a whole period of time. My first New Zealand tour in 2007 or the first tour in China in 2013, for example. The first concerts in Berlin during 2006 and 2009 were surely the most special though – it was always completely about the moment, and a world outside of that very moment was non-existent.

Which song would you still listen to even if the record were broken?
Otis Redding – These Arms of Mine

What does a romantic love scene sound like?
I suppose you mean a love scene in ancient Rome? I think the man will have fed the woman grapes while she was nibbling on a suckling pig, afterwards they’d have platonic sex in a sauna and then the woman would eat the man for dessert.

Name a magical place anywhere in the world.
In my heart, there is a swing hanging from an old maple tree on the top of a little hill.

A moment you will always remember?
My birth was quite the spectacle. As usual, I was running late because I still had a few things to get done. When I did finally see the light of day, the gypsy band had warmed up pretty well and was playing a couple of my favourite songs (though not quite sober anymore). And as far as I can remember, everybody was really happy. Except my brother – he kept asking the nurse whether he could still exchange me for a sister.

If you had a time machine for one day, which year would you set it to and why?
I’d just set it to tomorrow to avoid oversleeping again.

Which book, film and record should everyone have read, seen and listened to?
“Beck’s letzter Sommer”, of course! It’s a book, a movie AND a record! (Editors note: OST by Bonaparte)

With which artist (dead or alive) would you like to record a song?
Yesterday, Kurt Cobain called and asked me to start a band with him and Billie Holiday. But I had just promised to do a DJ set with Johnny Cash. It’s such a drag being popular. Maybe it’s time for a cover version of “We are the World” again.

Which super power would you like to have?
I’d like to be like Buster Keaton. He was human, but he seemed like a superhero to me.

What would you cook for us if we visited you at home?
As a token of my affection I’d saw off one of my legs and roast it on the fire in my garden. Unless you are vegetarians, of course. In that case, I’d serve Chinese braised aubergines ad homemade bread with little things hidden inside.

What are you afraid of?
Interviews.

When did you last try something new and what was it?
Yesterday! I wrote and recorded a song with Bela B in my secret studio. Before that, we’d only have Schnapps together.

What should no one know about you?
Nothing!

Which question should we have asked?
The last question about the last question about the pink elephant in the room.
