The 2 Minute Interview

Crunchy vegetables, inspiring plants – Sarah Britton is something like the superstar of the young, trend and substance-conscious food blog scene. She is collecting one prize after the other with her blog and her uniquely delicious and healthy recipes from root, leaf and fruit. She holds workshops on Detox and healthy diet, gives TED talks, collaborates with gourmet chefs here and there and her recipes work in Norma’s Test Kitchen, the Nordic food lab, various restaurants in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen and, most importantly, in your own kitchen. Because now, her first cookbook MY NEW ROOTS, already a great success in the US and other parts of the world, is finally available in German.  Just in time for the release – which will be duly celebrated tonight starting at 6.30 p.m. in the Kochhaus Prenzlauer Berg – we’ve sat down and had a good chat about culinary preferences, green diet, masterpieces and hot dogs. If that’s quickened your appetite, we have a treat in store for you. Send an Email headlining ‚GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK‘ to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de. And grab a brand new copy of ‚MY NEW ROOTS‘ hot off the press. Enjoy!

Where are your roots?
My roots are buried deep in Canada, where I am originally from. Hoping to move back someday…

What was the last thing you had to eat?
I had a big spinach salad with chickpeas, sweet potato, peppers, homemade sprouts and avocado.

What do you tell people, who say the vegetarian lifestyle doesn’t provide you with enough nutrient?
We need to get over this HUGE misconception! It is easy to get enough nutrients on a plant-based diet, so long as you’re eating whole foods in proper balance.

A recipe anyone can accomplish?
My recipe Four Corners Lentil Soup, which can be found on my blog and in my cookbook. It’s a great place to begin if you want to eat healthier, especially if you’re pressed for time and on a budget.

What is your favorite time of the year?
Summer! I love swimming and generally being outside, so the warmer months are my favourite.

You meet yourself at the age of 18. Which advise would you give to yourself?
I would tell myself to stop obsessing over being skinny. One thing I’ve learned through my studies is that women are supposed to have curves! I can confidently say that I am the healthiest I’ve ever been, even though I am not stick-thin. I am proud of my body and love it so much just the way it is!

What was your favourite food when you were a child?
Hot dogs!

Your greatest masterpiece yet?
My cookbook. I have never put so much time, energy and sheer love into anything in my life. It was an incredible project that I am very proud of.

What did you dream of last night?
I dreamt I was traveling through Provence, France.

With which famous person (dead or alive) would you like to go out for drinks?
Alice Waters

What would you cook for us if we came to visit you?
Something seasonal and hopefully with local ingredients. I never know until I go shopping! :)

What are you afraid of?
I’m afraid of how much our dietary habits are damaging the environment. I’m afraid that because of the poor choices we are making today, that my son’s world will look very different.

What would you change in the world if you’d have the chance and the power to?
I would encourage everyone to adopt a plant-based lifestyle!

When was last time you tried something new and what was it?
I tried black garlic recently and loved it. I am using it in everything from soups and stews to sauces and dressings. YUM.

What should no one know about you?
That I read cookbooks instead of literature.

Last words: I’m very grateful to have so many readers in Germany and so thrilled my book has now been translated! I love this country so much <3

Bonaparte

The 2 Minute Interview

The term “life in the limelight” was born when Tobias Jundt aka Bonaparte founded the eponymous band in 2006. Anybody who has witnessed the wild bustle of Punk, costumes and masks, eloquence and lots of bare skin, knows what we are talking about. He answered our questions for this little intro as follows: Who are you? “Bonaparte, Emperor of the people and the hearts.“ Where do people know you from? “From radio and television and from the pub around the corner.” What do you do? “Right now, I am answering interview questions.” What else do you plan on doing? “Afterwards, I will eat a pineapple and write a hit song!” Well, we could finish right here – pretty much everything has been said. He’s genius and madness in one; he’s ironic and painfully honest (honest!) and very likeable of course. So, if we stopped right here you’d never find out about sex with a suckling pig in a sauna, the swing on a maple tree or the pink elephant. We highly recommend going to see one of Bonaparte’s gigs either in Hamburg or Berlin to anyone who is ready for more after reading all of this. We’re giving away guest list tickets for each gig. Send an email titled “ANTI ANTI!” to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de.

Name: Bonaparte
Age: unknown
Location: Berlin, Wellington, the world
Job: musician
Shoe size: 39.5
Favourite mask: mine
Contact: The moon, exit 2, third house on the left!
Describe yourself in three words.
Three third threesomes!

What is your Plan B?
Musicians always live their Plan B, because they’d have to finish school to have a Plan A.

Which concert will you never forget?
Oh… there are a few…I often like to remember a whole period of time. My first New Zealand tour in 2007 or the first tour in China in 2013, for example. The first concerts in Berlin during 2006 and 2009 were surely the most special though – it was always completely about the moment, and a world outside of that very moment was non-existent.

Which song would you still listen to even if the record were broken?
Otis Redding – These Arms of Mine

What does a romantic love scene sound like?
I suppose you mean a love scene in ancient Rome? I think the man will have fed the woman grapes while she was nibbling on a suckling pig, afterwards they’d have platonic sex in a sauna and then the woman would eat the man for dessert.

Name a magical place anywhere in the world.
In my heart, there is a swing hanging from an old maple tree on the top of a little hill.

A moment you will always remember?
My birth was quite the spectacle. As usual, I was running late because I still had a few things to get done. When I did finally see the light of day, the gypsy band had warmed up pretty well and was playing a couple of my favourite songs (though not quite sober anymore). And as far as I can remember, everybody was really happy. Except my brother – he kept asking the nurse whether he could still exchange me for a sister.

If you had a time machine for one day, which year would you set it to and why?
I’d just set it to tomorrow to avoid oversleeping again.

Which book, film and record should everyone have read, seen and listened to?
“Beck’s letzter Sommer”, of course! It’s a book, a movie AND a record! (Editors note: OST by Bonaparte)

With which artist (dead or alive) would you like to record a song?
Yesterday, Kurt Cobain called and asked me to start a band with him and Billie Holiday. But I had just promised to do a DJ set with Johnny Cash. It’s such a drag being popular. Maybe it’s time for a cover version of “We are the World” again.

Which super power would you like to have?
I’d like to be like Buster Keaton. He was human, but he seemed like a superhero to me.

What would you cook for us if we visited you at home?
As a token of my affection I’d saw off one of my legs and roast it on the fire in my garden. Unless you are vegetarians, of course. In that case, I’d serve Chinese braised aubergines ad homemade bread with little things hidden inside.

What are you afraid of?
Interviews.

When did you last try something new and what was it?
Yesterday! I wrote and recorded a song with Bela B in my secret studio. Before that, we’d only have Schnapps together.

What should no one know about you?
Nothing!

Which question should we have asked?
The last question about the last question about the pink elephant in the room.
