‚Tis the Spargel Season

We had it all figured out two weeks ago: set up the mandatory Facebook event link and send out a press release for the asparagus event taking place at Refugium Beelitz on May 9th. Oh, plenty of time for fine-tuning information and making sure two or maybe three thousand asparagus-crazy city slickers find their way to the abandoned ruins of the former tuberculosis sanatorium on the outskirts of Berlin. Then, we went to bed. By the time we woke up the next morning, a few thousand people had already clicked and said they were coming. Within 36 hours, it was ten thousand, now almost eighteen thousand. Well, what can we say? Let’s face it, asparagus is the new black, idyllic countryside is the new hip and Brandenburg is the new Berlin. For all of you oblivious to any sources of media so far (how is that even possible?) here’s the whole truth and nothing but the truth: on May 9th from 12–10pm, the Refugium Beelitz is hosting the festival „Spargel International“ together with the fabulous Contemporary Food Lab that created an exceptional food concept. A whole day of exploring the grounds, snacking on creative asparagus variations and watching international chefs from Peru, France, South Korea, Syria and Iran – all of them having started a new life in Germany – prepare their own traditional dishes with Germany’s favourite vegetable. This will also mark the new beginning for the Beelitz hideaway before renovation and reconstruction work for 50 apartments and studios start this summer. There’ll be music from Apples in Space, currently on tour with Element of Crime, DJ Bonnie will be spinning the decks and the farmers’ market is offering regional products like honey and jam. To keep the number of participants under control and make sure everything runs smoothly, a total of 5.000 tickets will be available via the Eventbrite ticketing platform, each ticket costing 7 euro (including 5 euro vouchers for food and drinks, the other 2 euro go towards all the helping hands and additional parking spaces). Access to the grounds will only be granted with a valid ticket – first come, first serve! The first lot of tickets was already sold out after only a short time, but there’ll be more tickets on sale every Wednesday (THAT’S TODAY!) at 6 pm. Don’t forget to set your alarm! We’re very excited and looking forward to enjoying a lovely day out in the countryside with as many of you as possible!  The „Spargel Countdown“ has started.
