Divine Food

Our beloved Gestalten Books have just published ‚Abrahams Küche‘ (the English original is called Divine Food), a cookbook that is so much more than that. It is the manifestation of cultural commonalities in a region that never tires of emphasising the learnt, unsurmountable differences between its inhabitants. It is a journey through the promised land: from local markets and Arabian traditions to the nomadic cuisine of the desert regions and the hip restaurants in Tel Aviv. Because Israelis and Palestinians are united by their outstanding and dynamic culinary culture. Hummus? Everyone loves it be it here or there. The (attention!) Isreali-Palestininan cuisine has a unique abundance of flavours. Where trade routes once crossed, culinary intersections also came into being. Be it Shakshuka, Challa or Baklava – the regional recipes give an insight into the preparation as well as the origin of iconic dishes. The comprehensible and beautifully illustrated recipes and the anecdotes and background stories from applied geography make it easy to let the aromas of the Mediterranean-Oriental cuisine carry you away and introduce you to its traditions. Food? Unites! Families, friends, strangers, cities and yes, cultures. What would Berlin, for example, be without the culinary identity-mix of Döner-Thai-Schnitzel-Pasta-Indian-Currywurst? Right, pretty boring. Berlin cuisine? Here it is! Berlin unity? This is what it tastes like! Culinary culture means identity. Traditional recipes are like little culinary manifestations of a cultural unity. Even, and particularly, if that is officially non-existent although is has been there for millennia. We’re giving away an issue of this new primer for culinary international relations hot off the press. Send us an email headlining ‚BETEAVONSAKHA‘ to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de.

Sarah Britton

The 2 Minute Interview

Crunchy vegetables, inspiring plants – Sarah Britton is something like the superstar of the young, trend and substance-conscious food blog scene. She is collecting one prize after the other with her blog and her uniquely delicious and healthy recipes from root, leaf and fruit. She holds workshops on Detox and healthy diet, gives TED talks, collaborates with gourmet chefs here and there and her recipes work in Norma’s Test Kitchen, the Nordic food lab, various restaurants in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen and, most importantly, in your own kitchen. Because now, her first cookbook MY NEW ROOTS, already a great success in the US and other parts of the world, is finally available in German.  Just in time for the release – which will be duly celebrated tonight starting at 6.30 p.m. in the Kochhaus Prenzlauer Berg – we’ve sat down and had a good chat about culinary preferences, green diet, masterpieces and hot dogs. If that’s quickened your appetite, we have a treat in store for you. Send an Email headlining ‚GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK‘ to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de. Where are your roots?
My roots are buried deep in Canada, where I am originally from. Hoping to move back someday…

What was the last thing you had to eat?
I had a big spinach salad with chickpeas, sweet potato, peppers, homemade sprouts and avocado.

What do you tell people, who say the vegetarian lifestyle doesn’t provide you with enough nutrient?
We need to get over this HUGE misconception! It is easy to get enough nutrients on a plant-based diet, so long as you’re eating whole foods in proper balance.

A recipe anyone can accomplish?
My recipe Four Corners Lentil Soup, which can be found on my blog and in my cookbook. It’s a great place to begin if you want to eat healthier, especially if you’re pressed for time and on a budget.

What is your favorite time of the year?
Summer! I love swimming and generally being outside, so the warmer months are my favourite.

You meet yourself at the age of 18. Which advise would you give to yourself?
I would tell myself to stop obsessing over being skinny. One thing I’ve learned through my studies is that women are supposed to have curves! I can confidently say that I am the healthiest I’ve ever been, even though I am not stick-thin. I am proud of my body and love it so much just the way it is!

What was your favourite food when you were a child?
Hot dogs!

Your greatest masterpiece yet?
My cookbook. I have never put so much time, energy and sheer love into anything in my life. It was an incredible project that I am very proud of.

What did you dream of last night?
I dreamt I was traveling through Provence, France.

With which famous person (dead or alive) would you like to go out for drinks?
Alice Waters

What would you cook for us if we came to visit you?
Something seasonal and hopefully with local ingredients. I never know until I go shopping! :)

What are you afraid of?
I’m afraid of how much our dietary habits are damaging the environment. I’m afraid that because of the poor choices we are making today, that my son’s world will look very different.

What would you change in the world if you’d have the chance and the power to?
I would encourage everyone to adopt a plant-based lifestyle!

When was last time you tried something new and what was it?
I tried black garlic recently and loved it. I am using it in everything from soups and stews to sauces and dressings. YUM.

What should no one know about you?
That I read cookbooks instead of literature.

Last words: I’m very grateful to have so many readers in Germany and so thrilled my book has now been translated! I love this country so much <3

One Pink Elephant

One Pink Elephant

Yoga teachers Heather Donaldson aka Daisy and Martin Riede, also known as Flippo, are from Ansbach, Bavaria. Being the “kiez-potatoes” that we are, we probably never would have heard of them, if they weren’t just about to launch their first cookbook and we hadn’t been able to get a sneak peek at it (past perfect + future subjunctive?!). Flippo and Daisy have known each other for years and have a similar story: loads of work, complete exhaustion, yoga as a lifeline, a professional reboot. Being convinced that a healthy diet contributes just as much to the harmony of body and spirit as exercises on the mat, they founded a yoga school and started a catering business at the same time. Pink Elephant Cooking prepares vegan, sugarfree, soyfree, sometimes raw but always freestyle meals enriched with superfoods for yogis (and non-yogis, of course) around the world. Apart from best quality produce – regional whenever possible and mostly organic –, love and enthusiasm are the main ingredients for their cuisine. It’s not unusual to find Daisy and Flippo singing aloud and moonwalking on the kitchen tiles that mean the world. But what’s most important: Pink Elephant food doesn’t only make you fit and happy, it actually fills your belly, too. And let’s be honest: that isn’t always the case with vegan or raw food, is it? Prior to the official release, we are giving away two copies of their cookbook. Send an email with the subject “THINK PINK” to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de and keep yoging!
