Pas de deux

Pas de deux

The fantastic „Deux“ lamp stands – or rather leans – on its own two feet. That practically already explains the mode of operation. With its two long and lean legs – either brass or with a colour finish – the lamp leans nonchalantly against the wall and casts an indirect circle of light fraying in hypnotic streaks. Is this still a lamp or is this an installation of art? Who cares? It looks incredible either way. The effect increases when two lamps are posed as a couple. The label Deux stands for innovative interpretation and authentic manufacturing: all designs are based on industrial aesthetics and old prototypes dating as far back as 1860. The idea for this lamp came up in search of flexible wall lighting in factories, particularly for lathes. It had to be freestanding, easy to adjust and mounted without having to drill holes in the wall. Mission accomplished! We’ve already set up a lovely pair of Deux leaning against our grey studio wall. Keen on having one? Check out colours and combinations on www.deuxproduct.com or selekkt.de. We’re giving away one in stylish grey with a black cord and a mirrored 60-watt bulb. Send an email with the subject „IS IT A LAMP? IS IT ART? IT’S A DEUX!“ to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de and maybe you’ll be dancing the Pas de Deux in your living room soon. If you have two left feet, children or pets at home, you might want to fix it to the wall after all – better safe than sorry. But don’t worry – it won’t detract from the elegance of this lamp. Not one bit.

Stovecat

mmw_Ofenkatze

Stovecat

Patricia’s birthday presents are the best. They’re sweet, small, and so yummy. Patricia is the Ofenkatze (stovecat) and to make a long story short: she makes the best Mini-Gugelhupf in the world. She’s not officially allowed to call them that, because – of course – in Good Old Germany, there are rules and regulations for that as well: only a cake made with a leavened dough is allowed to be called a Guglhupf. If you ask us, as long as it tastes good we don’t really care what it’s called. But speaking of names, we’d like to add this much: unconfirmed sources have said, that in Vorarlberg, Austria, the shape of a Guglhupf reminds people of a cat curled up in front of the stove – hence the name Ofenkatze. Good to know. Patricia inherited her passion for lovely cakes from her grandmother. Every Sunday, after Spaetzle and the like, she’d bake a marble cake to die for – in a traditional Gugelhupf baking tin, of course. A memory that stuck! Since February 13th, the Ofenkatze bakes her Mini Bundt Cakes (that’s what the little marvels are now called officially) at Fräulein Bükers at Stephanstraße 24 in Berlin Moabit. You can buy them there on weekends; apart from that everything is baked to order so far. So if you’re looking for a delicious little gift or just want something to nosh yourself, send an email to patricia@ofenkatze.com. You can choose for example from lemon cake, chocolate and hazelnut brittle, raspberry buttermilk with white chocolate and many more. And especially for Easter, there’s carrot cake and eggnog-chocolate chip. At the moment, deliveries are only possible within Berlin. To those of you with a particularly sweet tooth: we’re giving away a sample set of 9 minis with the flavours above. So lick your lips Berliners and send an email with the subject “WIR SIND GERÜHRT“ to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de.

Tina Gerstung

Tina Gerstung

The 2 Minute Interview

Tina Gerstung, née Haderlein, has counted exactly 1000 freckles in her face, is in a good mood most of the time, is madly in love with Berlin and since August 2012, she has been working as editor in chief for the Berlin based online city portal QIEZ.de (which is now also featuring one of our muxmäuschenwild recommendations once a month). Her life on the go is about to change: as of today, Tina is on maternity leave. From now on, she’ll „just“ be a mommy and housewife. And that in Prenzlauer Berg, too, as she commends ironically. Well, at least she’ll have plenty of time to bake cheesecake, write her next berlin travel guide and read all parts of  „Fifty Shades of Grey“ books yet to come. Oh the life of a housewife… P.S. Girl or boy?

Name: Tina Gerstung
Age: 32
Location: Berlin
Occupation: editor in chief at QIEZ.de, on maternity leave as of April
Shoe Size: 36
Favourite neighbourhood: Teutoburger Platz
Contact: tina.gerstung@gmail.com

What is the German noun gender for Kiez?  Kiez is masculine, no question. Just like to me, the event is neuter and the blog is masculine.

Where exactly do you live? In the almost picturesque Choriner Straße.

Do you sometimes catch yourself confirming a classic pregnancy cliché such as food cravings? I’ve had surprisingly few food cravings so far – although I’m already nine months pregnant now. But there definitely has been the occasional I-NEED-A-BURGER-RIGHT-NOW moment.

What is the current wallpaper on your phone?
Kind of cheesy – a picture from our honeymoon on the gorgeous Maldive Island of Kanahura.

What are your three favourite shops? Uh, only three? Well, then it’s Ting for home accessories and gifts with a Nordic touch, my favourite Italian restaurant Trattoria Toscana for gnocchi with goat’s cheese and the Ruhepool for relaxing massages. And definitely the Du Bonheur for macarons.

What will you be missing soon? Shop openings and other fun parties in the evening.

What hair colours have you had so far? Er, blond, strawberry blond, dark blond – so basically: blond.

What superpowers do you have at night?  I can give birth without pain. (Surely, Tina will be teaching autosuggestion classes soon, editor’s note.)

What are you really good at?  Baking cheesecake.

What’s the best way to twist you around one’s little finger? Macarons, doing housework, pretty flowers.

What do you do when you can’t sleep? I get up, sit down in the living room with my nursing pillow and read.

When did you last do something that was completely selfless? Today, I helped an elderly and confused lady get on and off the tram.

What are you afraid of? Loved ones dying.

If we came to visit you, what would you cook for us? Something quick, a ginger carrot soup, maybe.

What would you change if you had the power to do so? The current state of the world.

What should no one know about you? That I’ve read the complete “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy.

Which question should we have asked?

Is it going to be a boy or a girl? I’ve hardly heard that question at all, lately :) I don´t even know the answer to that question myself.

Last words: Something I always like to have.

Big Linda

mmw_dickeLinda

Big Linda

‚Die Dicke Linda‘ is small and round and has a rich yellow tinge. Linda is Germany’s most popular potato variety and was even awarded “Best Potato of the Year” in 2007. Die Dicke Linda is also the name of the new weekly farmer’s market that offers produce from Brandenburg’s fields and flowerbeds and local manufacturers. Starting this Saturday, and then every first and third Saturday of the month, the Kranoldplatz – a rather unimpressive square in the midst of boomtown Neukölln – is brought to life with bustling stalls offering food galore: fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers, homemade jams, freshly baked bread and cakes, coffee and wine, game and cut meats from Brandenburg, fresh fish from the Scharmützelsee and loads of delicious snacks to polish off on the spot. Die Dicke Linda already took place three times last year. It was so successful, it earned its weekly slot, initiated and organized by Theresa Dühn. The 32-year-old lives just around the corner and strives to bring healthy, seasonal and handmade products to the neighbourhood. Wanting to create a meeting place to enjoy coffee breaks and lunch, she even asked neighbours about their wishes and ideas. They’re all very excited about having their own market again. So are we. And so be it. P.S. Make sure you meet Biobauer Klaus!

Voodoo Voodoo

Voodoo Voodoo

If muxmäuschenwild were to open a shop, this is what it would be like: presenting and selling lovely pieces handmade with dedication by talented international designers based in Berlin – carefully selected and arranged perfectly to our liking. „Slow shopping“ is the name of the game. It wouldn’t be all about the money – we’d want to get to know the people behind the products, exchange ideas and promote sustainable shopping experiences. Tomorrow night, berlinoise couple Oryanne & Raphael open their shop „Un Autre Voodoo“. And what can we say: their shop IS exactly like that. After launching their magical pop-up shop in December, they’re now ready to grow roots in Berlin Neukölln. The address is fixed, designers and collections will change and what’s gone is gone. Come to the opening party and meet the 25 young designers, have a couple of cool drinks and enjoy some good music. Oryanne and Raphael will be there, too, of course. Maybe we can persuade our soul mates to put a muxmäuschenwild sticker on the door. Officially recommended, loved and covered with frosting by muxmäuschenwild or something like that.

Happyli ever after

mmw_fairytale

Happily ever after

Everybody knows it, everybody likes it, although nobody knows exactly why: The Märchenbrunnen (fountain of fairy tales). Even grown men get this dreamy look on their faces and are enchanted by the fairytale characters in this lovely corner of the Volkspark and turn into a tame softies. Let’s face it: Hansel and Gretel, Puss in Boots, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White send us straight down memory lane and back to a time when children’s fantasies were part of reality, life was made of miracles and there was no daily routine. We still want to dream, we still want to believe. No matter how big, strong or evil you are, if a two year old hands you a toy phone, you’re going to answer it. Well, the fountain of fairy tales is no longer alone. Just across from the Märchenbrunne, the Fairytale Bar now takes us to the land of good and evil, happiness and horror and damn good drinks. With all the magic going on inside the Fairytale bar, it’s still all about enjoying exceptionally composed cocktails and long drinks. Come and sip on some magic potion, ease your mind and let your imagination go wild. If the phone rings and there’s no kid standing in front of you, just let it ring – you deserve it.

The Craft and the Spirits

The Craft and the Spirits

In clarity lies strength. Vodka and such are slowly but surely shaking off the bad rep of just being the hard stuff for cocktails. The cheaper the booze, the sweeter the taste – that’s no longer the way to go. As with food, beer and whatever else ends up on our tables, more and more consumers and producers are getting back to basics by appreciating genuine, pure and high quality alcohols and good spirits. Fräulein Brösel, for example, sweetly finishes off any dinner with her hazelnut and fruit brandies distilled in Berlin Neukölln. The craft movement is clearly experiencing a boom – new distillates, brands and manufacturers are popping up on the map of ardent spirits almost daily, covering a range from absinth and brandy to vodka and whiskey to rum, gin, mezcal and pastis, the motto here being quality rather than quantity. Alcohol in moderation: enjoying a drink instead of guzzling it down. This weekend, together with co-organizers and liquor experts Dr. Kochan and Theo Ligithart, the creators of Markthalle Neun invite you to the 4th Craft Spirits Festival Destille Berlin held in the warehouse of the Heeresbäckerei. On an area of 750m2, connoisseurs, enthusiasts and spirit seekers can discover up to 500 top-notch spirit specialities from 50 German and international exhibitors. Due to artisan skills and substantial quality, the use of natural and regional ingredients and the small structures, both manufacturers and their products meet with the Slow Food criteria. Thus, this event is designed in line with the ideas of Markthalle Neun as an alternative to industrial mass production and offers genuine craft spirits from around the world for a relatively small amount of money. During numerous presentations, interested novices may gain a profound insight into the world of firewater. Handcrafted quality can be savoured at free tastings and at the Craft Spirit Bar, so be sure to line your stomach! You could conveniently stop by the Naschmarkt (Easter candy market) at Markthalle Neun just around the corner… During distilling demonstrations, you can also watch how fruit brandy is made. On Saturday evening, the best spirits from three categories will receive the “Craft Spirits Award 2015”. Enjoy in moderation.

Rooted in Berlin

Niko Rittenau is from Carinthia in Austria. Chubby as a child, skinny as a teenager, until finally discovering a world of healthy and mindful food for himself. Niko moved to Vienna, completed training as a Gourmet Raw Food Chef at the Matthew Kenney Academy in California and arrived in Berlin in 2013. Good for him. And good for Berlin – his veggie supper clubs are legendary. For one, the food is incredibly delicious and secondly, it’s even more than that. Niko shares details on products and manufacturing in context while presenting the exciting and yummy possibilities of a plant-based diet. He considers himself the link between producer and guest and as a cook he would like to promote attentiveness towards high-quality, sustainable and healthy food. Meals are prepared with local ingredients grown in and around Berlin. His new vegan super club “Conscious Cooking” starts tomorrow at the Leogant Loft – and is completely sold out. But we’ve reserved two seats at the table for those with the biggest appetite for knowledge. So get cracking and send an email with the subject “FLEISCH IST KEIN GEMÜSE” to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de.

Get a whiff of Berlin’s, Hamburg’s and Munich’s freshest air

Get a whiff of Berlin’s, Hamburg’s and Munich’s freshest air

Frau Toni should definitely ring a bell with any cosmopolitan who has a thing for fine scents. Her individually created fragrances are all made in Berlin, after all. In perfume paradise, located on the Kreuzberg-end of Friedrichstraße, 30 large apothecary bottles are all lined up and ready to be opened. The smell of lime blossoms and pure violets unfolds, as well as compositions with Berlin flair such as zesty „Berlin Summer“ or spicy „Eau de Berlin“ – the metropolitan zeitgeist in a bottle. Frau Toni is actually called Stefanie Hanssen and is strictly speaking the granddaughter of Antonia – the real „Frau Toni“ and an utterly wonderful smelling person. Together with her partner Christopher Niedermeier, Stefanie Hansson is truly dedicated to keeping the inherited passion for fragrances alive. For the KaDeWe-Group the two have now captured, reinterpreted and bottled up the scents of Germany’s three largest cities. Eau de Cologne is sooo yesterday… Ladies and gentleman, we proudly present: Eau de Berlin, Eau d’Hamburg and Eau de Munich. If you´re thinking subway, doggy doo and neighbourhood niff, you`ve got it all wrong. Berlin is vibrant and smells of bergamot, lemons and water lilies, cedar wood and cardamom. Hamburg, however, is straightforward yet elegant with maritime notes, spicy peppermint, fine sandalwood and iris. And Munich? Munich shines! Bergamot, white tea and rose blossoms mixed with fresh coriander, amber and musk. We couldn’t really make up our minds which one we liked best. Staying true to Berlin, we tried the bottled labelled 030 first, of course. But we have to say, 040 and 089 have indulged our senses just as much. We’ll just have to have them all! Drop by the perfume manufactory near Checkpoint Charly and sniff for yourselves. Shop at KaDeWe, Alsterhaus and Oberpollinger, order your individual eau de perfume here or be quick and send an email to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de with the subject ‚DES RIECHT FEI KNORKE DIGGER‘– we’re giving away three sets with all three fragrances for your olfactory city trip. Oh, and just for the record: you don’t necessarily have to live in the city to smell like it…
