Sweet Talk

Once upon a time, not that long ago, there was a man who was in his prime. His name was Johan Bülow and he lived in the small, picturesque town Svaneke on the Danish island Bornholm. Johan was an ambitious man with many ideas and visions, but above all one great passion: liquorice. Was sounds like the beginning of a Hans Christian Andersen story is the actual the truth about the success story of Lakrids. For over 5000 years, liquorice root has been used as medicine in China and that’s almost as long as liquorice has been enjoyed as a sweet treat across the continents. Johan, however, saw so much more potential in the sweet black root. And so, after various meticulous brewing attempts in a battered stainless steel pot, he ended up developing Lakrids, the world’s first gourmet liquorice, almost 10 years ago.
Beyond the pure, salmiac indulgence, this liquorice is made for spicing up and sweetening dishes of any kind, for enriching marinades and for giving drinks, ice cream and salad dressings that special twist. The foundation are carefully selected ingredients. Johan obtains the liquorice roots from the best farmers in Afghanistan, Iraq and Italy. They are enriched with local products whenever possible. Even the Chili Habanera comes from an organic Danish nursery. As an inspiration for eating and drinking with liquorice, Johan has put together 72 recipes in a book. Bacon salad with pomegranate and liquorice? Oh yes. Chocolate truffles with liquorice caramel? Most definitely. A »Black Blossom« made of Gin, elderflower, lime juice and fruity red liquorice? Absolutely! And they lived sweetly ever after.

Print me like it´s hot!

Print me like it´s hot!

Every day, wonderful art prints on our walls inspire us to accomplish creative peak performances. We owe the beautification of our barren verticals to the design enthusiasts of
Juniqe. This platform brings together young, talented artists and art lovers and provides affordable art for the naked walls of Europe. And beyond. Under the flag of their motto »Art. Everywhere.«, the three founders Lea, Sebastian und Marc are constantly expanding their selected repertoire. And just in time for pre-pool season, Juniqe now also has swim wear for art-loving individualists. The bikinis, bathing suits and trunks with their all-over prints are European-made from top to bottom and sure to incite jealous looks left, right and center – way beyond the bikini body. Be it seasonally tolerant alpine landscapes, colourful Summer patterns or tropically exotic with a golden pineapple or a pink flamingo – recognition in a crowd is a given. As is the quality of the products. The subtle shine of 82% Nylon and 18% Spandex provides perfect radiance for the subjects. All models are lined with soft white material that stays non-transparent when wet. By the way: these beauties can be taken straight from the pool to the party: interpret the bathing suit as a body, pull the high-waist jeans over it, Sandals on, presto, fancy Nancy! We’re giving away a bikini slash swimsuit to the particulary splashy ones among you. Just send a mail heading ‚ITSY BITSY’to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de. Get over here, Summer!

HERBERT

MMW_herbert

HERBERT

Herbert is strong. All his life, it was mainly his physique, his strong presence and unyielding strength that characterized him and made him a successful boxer, the so-called „Pride of Leipzig“. But his pride has long faded… Now, Herbert earns his pay working as a debt collector for a dodgy guy. At least his boxing skills live on through Eddy, an Amateur Herbert coaches, his protégé. But something doesn’t seem quite right with Herbert. He starts feeling weaker and weaker, is plagued by cramps until he finally collapses. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS was a ubiquitous topic in the summer of 2014. Hundreds of thousands of people tipped buckets of iced water over their heads. Due to all the fun involved, the actual cause of the matter – drawing attention to a irreversible, incurable and merciless illness by imitating the pain it entails for just a second – was occasionally forgotten. So back to Herbert, the strong, mighty main character of Thomas Stubers feature film debut, who loses everything that ever defined him at a terrifying speed. He loses himself and we look on as the illness weakens him, paralyses him and steals the control over his body away from him, bit by bit. He is left with only little time to bring his affairs in order, to make peace with his daughter Sandra and granddaughter Ronja and take care of his relationship with his lover Maria. Actor Peter Kurth not only plays Herbert – he really IS Herbert. He lets us experience the life and suffering. Death is inevitable for him and simply by knowing this, we can join him on his journey from and to himself. Each minute, each second, intensely, finally, to the end, the salvation from the pain and from the shackle of the unsaid. A moving and grounding film. A truly good German film.

The sweet soul of life

The sweet soul of life

Sweets lift the spirits. Good sweets even make you happy. And delicious sweets in unrivalled quality can even make you euphoric. As we experienced ourselves recently during our visit to the Green Market Berlin. Curiosity and an appetite for sugar made us indulge in a few bars from Retos Candy Farm. The „Figaro“, for example: a combination of fantastic fig, rich ricotta and bewitching balsamico. Fluffy malt drops made from creamy, top-fermented British stout. Or the ultimate boost of energy Elvis Presley style: the “Banana Monkey”, a tummy-filling mix of the yellow fruit and sticky peanut butter. That’s about as American as these Retos bars get, mind you. Their delicious creations have absolutely nothing in common with the industrialised, plastic-infested, imperialistically produced calorie bombs that we find lined-up at the supermarket check-out, waiting to attack starved binge-watchers. The products being brewed, stirred and weighed by the gram in a former restaurant kitchen on the shore of the Spree in Kreuzberg are, as their creator Reto Brunner says, “small portions of hand-made joy”. Which brings us back to the beginning. The good things in life. And what made us return to the Candy Farm booth to shop some more after that first taste. Did we mention that the ingredients of Retos sweets are not only hand-picked and merged after countless experiments, but also organic? Goes without saying? Yeah, you know us pretty well by now. And our taste.

Let there be light

Let there be light

As much as we occasionally yearn for complete silence, darkness and seclusion, as romantic as we find the night sky whose only source of light are its myriad twinkling stars: we just can’t imagine our daily lives without electricity. For 1.1 billion people on this earth, however, that is reality. They live in off-grid regions in Africa, Australia, Canada, Europe and other places without stable electricity. And in most cases, it has nothing to do with romanticism. They jeopardize their health in the light of toxic paraffin lamps, mobile phones that can’t be charged stand in the way of networking and obstruct access to learning opportunities, medical care and information. Icelandic artist Olafur Eliason has been dealing critically with topics such as climate, weather and natural spectacles in his art for years and is now attending to this electric emergency with a pragmatic and hands-on attitude. Together with the engineer and entrepreneur Frederik Ottensen, he developed the social business „Little Sun“ and went global. It’s not just about organizing funds and help, but also about producing locally and creating real alternatives. With their eponymous solar LED-lamp that can provide artificial light for up to 50 hours after charging sunlight for 5 hours, Little Sun not only provides practical pleasure but also enables children in areas lacking electricity to finish their homework after dusk, for example. In April, Little Sun lamp will be joined by the extremely powerful Little Sun Charge, that not only shines a light but also, thanks to solar power, charges mobile phones or other small electronic devices. Half a day of sunlight is enough to fully charge two mobile phones. Activities bound to electricity, such as gathering information, bank transfers or contacting doctors, are suddenly made possible for so many people. Little Sun works with a solidarity concept: anyone who buys a Little Sun product (for a read in their sleeping bag on the next camping trip, for example) helps to provide lamps and chargers at a fair price in regions without electricity. And because we are such fans of this, we won’t be giving away one of these practical gadgets today but will provide you with this link.

Wood is the message

Wood is the message

Our whole team has moved. Each and every single team member. From Moabit to Friedrichshain, from Wedding to Prenzlauerberg, to Neukölln and back again, upstairs, downstairs – the whole shebang. As we all get older and life progresses, so do our demands. Billy and Beddinge might have been enough for our own little piece of heaven in a shared flat, but today, we need something a little bit more substantial – we’re building a nest and not a shack after all. But apparently, that’s easier said than built. Beyond the Swedish universe in yellow and blue, you can either choose from high-end design manufactories, furniture shops offering a full range of Gelsenkirchen Baroque or cheap and off the rack discount furniture. Not your style? You’ve got specific ideas concerning shape, colour and material, but aren’t willing (or capable) to pay the price of a car for a bed or a wardrobe? Well, then you just might just want mosey on over to Holzconnection – one of their shops is just around the corner of our studio on Bötzowstraße. Holzconnection builds individual custom furniture made to measure and exclusively from long-lasting materials – such as maple, oak, alder and walnut. The modular range offers beds, wardrobes and cupboards, tables and chairs, and all sorts of shelves. Everything comes in intelligently packaged units and all manufacturing processes are optimally tailored. The point of all that? Best carpenter quality at a reasonable price. We like that. And we love our new bed Atlantis made of solid walnut with a natural oil finish. If you’d like one those too, check out one of the stores for good advice or browse through the online shop here www.holzconnection.de. Our promo code HolzMaus will get you an extra 5 % off your order over 500€. Sweet dreams.

You’re so Berlin, Baby!

MMW_LIL.jpeg

You’re so Berlin, Baby!

Before we get to the actual topic of this article, we’d like to sing a song of praise about life in the most beautiful, fantastic, fascinating and utterly sublime city of all. Oh Berlin, how wonderful you are. No matter how loved you are, you remain true to yourself – whether we’re just here for a quick visit or here to stay. You are unpretentious, hard-headed and genuine. We can have breakfast at 10 pm, or enjoy a Currywurst whenever we please – preferebly wearing a tux or almost nothing at all –  and yet you’ll always be your unpolished self. Berlin, you’re not just a city, you’re a way of life – from morning till night. You have your own rules and your own time. Which brings us to the main topic: there’s a new watch in town! It’s made in this city and that’s exactly why it’s sooo perfect. It answers to the lovely name Lilienthal Berlin, is très chic (of course!), and sustainably manufactured in Germany under fair conditions and with the highest quality of materials (expecting anything less?). But best of all, there is a piece of Berlin in every single part of it – sometimes visible and sometimes not, but always noticeable. The minutes are displayed on an outer ring on the face of the watch, and since we’re always on the go, we wouldn’t want to miss any of them. The digits are set in the different typefaces used for former East (minutes) and West (hours) street signs – you know, it’s all about overcoming borders and so on. Taking a closer look, you’ll find the embedded crown resembles the shape of the Urania, our beloved clock at the Alexanderplatz. And much more. Each Lilienthal Berlin can be styled according to outfit or time of day – the collection’s wrist straps can be changed with a simple click. In addition, 5 Euros of every sold watch will be donated to charitable projects in Berlin. Brilliant! The pre-sale has just started and features a limited edition of 1440 (total number of minutes in one day) watches in matt silver or gold with either a blue or white face. Each of them come with an engraved edition number and two naturally tanned leather straps in blue and brown. Please order here! Use our special promo code FRIENDS20 with your order before March 21, and get an extra 20 percent off! The complete collection will then be on sale at the end of April. We’ll keep you posted! But for now, we’re proud as a peacock and are giving away a Lilienthal Berlin in silver/white to those of you particularly in love with Berlin. Send an email titled IT’S TIME to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de.

I was blind but now I sea Pasta!

Pasta aus Riementang-Algen, Garnelen und Estragonsahne

I was blind but now I sea Pasta!

I spy with my little eye… something long and thin that goes perfectly with sauces, fish, meat and vegetables and is unbelievably delicious. Yup, you’ve got it! Well, actually no… OK, it’s complicated. Let’s try a different angle. What if there was something that looks like pasta, feels like it, tastes like it, is made of a renewable, 100% natural material that can be used from a raw und unprocessed state, is vegan, gluten free and sustainable, packed with antioxidants, polyunsaturated fatty acids, fibre, vitamins and minerals AND has much, much less calories and carbohydrates? Yes, that would be awesome! And of course you’re guessing where this long and sassy list is leading you, because yes, I Sea Pasta really does exist. And this is how that happened. One day, Willem, in his capacity as one of the nicest Dutch people since Marijke Amado, made an interesting discovery during his holiday in Spain: to his great disappointment, his order of seaweed-pasta-salad seemed at first sight to only include a whole lot of pasta and none of the promised maritime plants. Until he noticed that the green „fettuccine“ were in fact pure seaweeds in disguise. Which brought him to a brilliant idea: if seaweed is such a good substitute for pasta and isn’t just the newest culinary fad but also a great way to feed many people with a natural resource and little effort, why not make this plant the new star on the plate? The self-experiment was a success, his children were thrilled and I Sea Pasta became the newest economic and culinary super trend in our neighbouring country. After successful crowd funding in 2015, I Sea Pasta is now available at over 250 supermarkets in the Netherlands, Australia and UK. Now, the seaweed-noodle is also debuting in Germany and looks like it might become the most exciting alternative to the conventional original. We have spent the last couple of weeks over-indulging with them and are becoming more and more crafty with the recipes. Because interestingly, the taste and texture change depending on method and duration of cooking. Challenge accepted! And in this spirit: some sea weed. We sea more!

A splash of gold

A splash of gold

Oh, what a very noble bottle indeed! A nearly perfectly square glass flacon filled with 700 ml of what seems to be liquid gold – and a super-sized version of Chanel No 5. Although the glistening and shimmering content of a similar bottle does have a distinct scent equally striking as the one of the reputable perfume classic, you should preferably use it to wet your throat instead of dabbing it on your neck. The fact is, we’re talking about vodka here. Vodka from Lake Constance, to be precise. From generation to generation, the Senft family has specialised in distilling fine spirits. Rooted in tradition and with a strong bond to nature, the family business is not afraid to experiment either. And that is exactly why we were lucky enough to stumble upon their latest creation just around the corner from us at Satt & Glücklich. You see, the secret to Senft Wodka is that it is oak-barrel-aged – a procedure usually reserved for wine, whiskey and, most recently, beer – allowing it to develop its unique and brilliant golden colour and pick up its unmistakably mellow notes of summer with flavours of pine nuts, citrus fruits and a hint of anise. We’ve never tasted anything quite like it! So if you just happen to be on the lookout for the perfect gift that you’d rather keep for yourself, then feel free to knock yourself out right here. Or follow in our footsteps and stop by the Satt & Glücklich in Hufelandstraße and enjoy a soul food sandwich with a side of delicious dips and salads while your gaze wanders over the selection of spirits. Oh, Swabia – is there no end to your talents? If only it weren’t for the dialect… ah never mind. Bottoms up!
