Late Night Dogs

Late Night Dogs

What makes a perfect bar? Not too big, dimly lit and well stocked with exclusive alcoholic beverages. Either there’s a row of elegant stools lined up along the bar or plenty of old and comfy leather armchairs to sink into and make you feel like you had a title of nobility – or  at least an impressive collection of cigars. Wait. Freeze that exact image. Then add some old school hip hop. So far, so good. Now discard everything that might seem pretentious. And then, to top it all off, run a Kreuzberg-filter over everything. Et Voilà: Welcome to Bourbon Dogs. The American whiskey bar at Spreewaldplatz is a slightly different version of the perfect bar. The menu offers an exquisite selection of various classics and reinterpreted whiskey drinks, craft beer and the complete opposite of the everlasting bestseller at Swedish furniture stores: a darn good hot dog. If you’re feeling adventurous, choose from drinks listed as »unusual«, which are by definition »obscure whiskies made in unique styles«. If you’d rather take it slow, then go for a Brooklyn Lager with a Classic Dog. No need to go overboard, right? Well, on second thought…

Our daily porridge

Our daily porridge

Or health conscious parents taught us quite early that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that we should tuck in. When we realised that it meant tucking into a bowl of sticky oatmeal everyday we weren’t too impressed. But that was before there was Haferkater to shake off the grainy power-chow’s dusty image and instantly become our favourite breakfast location. The cosy wooden hut is a bright spot on Friedrichshains busy Boxhagener Straße and truly enriches the culinary landscape: it serves the very best porridge outside of Scotland. AND WE ABLOLUTELY LOVE IT. Childhood friends Anna, Leandro and Levin have lifted underrated porridge to a whole new level and have given it the appreciation it deserves in the spotlight of a healthy diet. Haferkater enhances the filling vegan, lactose and gluten-free British dish with seasonal ingredients such as fruity berries, homemade caramel or crunchy granola turns it into a luxury breakfast. The small menu is so nutritious and the lovingly created oasis so relaxing that it comes as no surprise that Haferkater was awarded the Gastro-Gründerpreis 2015 (gastronomy start-up prize).

A canteen-love-affair

A canteen-love-affair

Starting the new year we want to say thank you – to every single person that works at the fabulous restaurant eins44. Because whoever takes care of guests with such passion, knowledge, attention and understated charm, just has to be a wonderful person. The incredibly good service is just one great reason to pay this place a visit, hidden away in one of the back courtyards of Elbestraße and rather unpretentiously referred to as »Kantine Neukölln«. The focus, of course, is on the cuisine which is described – again quite unpretentiously – as bistro cuisine. But be assured, you’ll get so much more. All efforts not to drift off into hymns of praise fail miserably – the food here is nothing less than a revelation. The individual components of each dish are listed on the menu, but not their consistency, such as the following appetizer for 16 Euro: „Scallop. Butternut squash. Cannellini Bean. Pancetta.“ The surprise here being the unexpected way of preparation of all ingredients. Make sure to try the savoy cabbage crisps – they are formidable! As is the wine list with a focus on Riesling (our recommendation here: «vom grauen schiefer« from the Mosel region). Another plus is the ambiance of the turn-of-the-century industrial building that used to be a distillery for liqueur essences. Rustic wooden furniture and warm lighting create a frugal yet comfy atmosphere. Only downside: The menu doesn’t offer a great choice for vegetarians. But then again, it wouldn’t be the eins44, if it weren’t for the lovely staff that made the impossible possible, would it?

Naked Noodles

Naked Noodles

When it comes to the art of cooking (or dining-out that is) we prefer an unpretentious take on things. No fuss, no frills, no useless twaddle – just simply good food. nudo at Lausitzer Platz offers just that: genuine Italian cuisine featuring authentic and seasonally inspired dishes including homemade bread and handmade pasta. nudo keeps things uncomplicated all the way: there is no overwhelming menu with endless lists of foods to choose from. After all, »nudo« is the Italian word for »naked«, meaning »pure and simple«. The classic menu consists of a spinach salad with Parmesan shavings, beef Carpaccio, fresh ricotta-filled ravioli with sage butter and a sirloin steak served with roasted vegetables (all for an unbelievable price of only 28 Euro). And every week, chef Fausto Bianchetti meticulously creates a vegetarian menu for the more adventurous guests, too. And that’s already it. No umming and ahhing and wondering what your neighbour might be eating (and whether it’s better than what you just ordered) and no oh-maybe-I-could-try-some-of-yours questions either. Instead, you’ll enjoy an evening in a cosy restaurant aglow in low light that will make you feel you’re having dinner at a friend’s house – without the washing-up afterwards! Just sit down, eat, drink, talk and laugh. What more could you possibly ask for?

Oh come ye faithful!

Oh come ye faithful!

This year, we’ve been put to the test well and truly concerning our inclination and capability of giving and doing good. And rightly so. The spirit of giving continues as the wonderful season of Christmas markets begins. During the festive season, Berlin is full of creative markets offering far more than mulled wine: find handmade pieces at Haubentauscher, knickknacks at Klunkerkranich (the city’s highest market), admirables at the Apartment of Freunde von Freunden or beer at Birgit’s to name just a few of our favourites. And it’s not all about the eating and drinking: test your curling skills at Haubentaucher or take part in the workshop for floral arrangements organized by Freunde von Freunden on December 5th. Who knows, maybe you can even do some Christmas shopping while you’re browsing all these lovely markets featuring unusual and dazzling high-quality handmade products, a cosy atmosphere and plenty of live music with concerts, DJs and Berlin’s Kneipenchor (bar choir).

Knots of steel

In cooperation with Industrial Berlin, the well-connected Berlin carpet label The Knots is opening a little pop-up store of its own. The shop at Kanya Berlin Project Space on Choriner Straße opens on Thursday at 7.30 pm to showcase puristic steel furniture and colourful hand crafted vintage rugs. All of the lovely products will be on sale for another two days after opening, so if you prefer shopping in peace and quiet instead of mingling with the crowds while sipping on some bubbly, feel free to do so on Friday and Saturday from 12 to 8 pm.

What goes around comes around

MMW_CoffeeCircle

What goes around comes around

Our friends from the Coffee Circle are opening a pop-up shop. Hooray! End of story. Well, maybe we should mention that they’re doing this because they’re celebrating their 5th birthday and besides really good coffee, there’ll also be a bunch of interesting coffee-workshops. Learn how to make the perfect espresso, how to boost your energy in a healthy way, find out why the hell everybody’s drinking filter coffee again, which coffee-cocktails are really worth it, and – while we’re at it – learn how to create artistic hearts and leaves on top of your coffee. Find the complete list of events and book your tickets here. The grand pop-up opening will take place on Sunday, November 1st, and the café will be opened for one week (8am–7pm during the week, from 10am–7pm at the weekend.) Mention the code word muxmäuschenwild to one of the baristas and get your first cup of filter coffee for free. We’re giving away one of the highly coveted seats for the Health & Energy Boost Workshop with Lisa Müller on Saturday, November 7th to the biggest coffee junkie among you. Send an email titled “SPILLING THE BEANS” to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de.

Any plans for tonight?

Any plans for tonight?

The other day, we went out for a drink and we’ve been reminiscing ever since. It was one of those perfect nights. Great company, good drinks, rosemary popcorn and an atmosphere making you forget time and space. It seems as if The SCHWELGEREI at Sanderstraße has always been there. But in fact the bar with an exquisite choice of long drinks, craft beers and selected wines has only been around since April. A lot has happened since then: many legendary evenings of sophisticated boozing and a few regular and very special yet quite unusual tastings. Starting at 8 pm tonight, the Schwelgerei is taking things a step further in just the right direction. Food Journalist Peter Eichhorn is hosting the first Beer & Cheese Tasting. Pale, dark, mild, full-flavoured or malty – 5 beer specialities are paired with 5 different delicious cheeses provided by Fritz Blomeyer. Beer and Cheese? Yes, please! Book your seat for a mere 30 Euros and enjoy an evening of interesting flavours and anecdotes that will leave you blissfully merry and your tummies filled. We’ve reserved two seats at the table for the most adventurous taste buds. Quickly send an email titled ‚CHEESE AND BEER WILL MAKE YOU CHEER‘ to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de. Chin-chin!

A room with a view

MMW_Vacancy

A room with a view

An abandoned hotel in the middle of the city – completely empty and gutted. 33 rooms stripped down to the core. Come on Berlin, show us some magic! In collaboration with ZEIT Magazin, GALERIE CRONE has invited 33 international emerging artists to present their work on a total of 5 floors and turn “The Vacancy” into a 1,400-sqm art exhibition before expansion and rebuilding begin. Temporary space at its best! The participating artists each have their individual approach to the still existing architecture and the interim presentation. Their artistic media include paintings, sculptures, photographs, video art, installations or live performances and their work explicitly corresponds with its surroundings and the temporary state of the building. The folks from Parker Bowles and Prince Charles have also set up shop and are serving drinks and little snacks. The Vacancy has been opening its doors since October 1st and the exhibition is only on show until next Monday. So if you haven’t made it there yet, we highly recommend to pay a visit to Friedrichstr.124 as fast as you can.

A bunch of happiness

A bunch of happiness

Sometimes, just by chance, you come across a place that you didn’t even know existed. The Blumenkörbchen just around the corner of our office on Käthe-Niederkirchner-Straße is one of those places. A bout six months ago we walked in here in need of a bouquet for one our team member’s birthday. We were looking for something special, something that said „hand-picked from the meadow“ and not so much „got this at the gas station“… The Blumenkörbchen is a wonderful little shop bursting with fresh, colourful and lovely scented flowers. And if it weren’t for Kathrin Necker we’d be completely overwhelmed by the rosy abundance of choice. In a virtuoso manner she picks flower after flower from all sorts of different vases, buckets and tubs and rustles up a stunning bouquet in a matter of minutes. We are impressed. And slightly nervous. We start checking our pockets for extra money… All we have is 15 bucks – we were NOT expecting such opulence. We then look at the receipt which reads 12,50 euro. Okay, now we’re confused. And still are two weeks later. The beautiful bunch of flowers is still going strong and absolutely gorgeous. We haven’t figured out yet how Kathrin manages to offer such high quality, perfect expertise and craftsmanship for practically next to nothing. But we’ve been buying our flowers here ever since – no matter the occasion. We keep telling her to raise her prices, but all she says in return:  „Next time, I promise.“ Luckily, some things never change…
