State of Affairs

mmw_statefestival-17ebb550f5c6657667a3ced7f88e060b

When the STATE Science Festival first gathered scientists and artists from all sorts of disciplines and genres in Berlin two years ago in order to deal with the overall topic of ‚time‘, an unprecedented playful and fascinating programme of films, workshops, panels, art installations, performances and audio visual dream worlds. Two years had to pass for the next edition of this great spectacle somewhere between education, art and scientific expedition. And this time, it’s going to get emotional – literally. ‚STATE of Emotion – The Sentimental Machine‘ is title and motto of this edition that invites you to dive deep into a see of emotions, to interactively and playfully discover emotional research, neuroscience, experimental psychology and artificial intelligence. A place of inspiration is being created on the festival grounds in the Kühlhaus at the Gleisdreieck, a place of critical reflection and creative exchange between science, culture and the public as well as established academic institutions and protagonists of the young open-science-subculture, made up of independent makers, developers, artists, scientists and creatives. Some highlights of the programme are an appearance by Margaret A. Boden, international originator of the field of artificial creativity, the premier of a new work by the renowned American concept artist and experimental philosopher Jonathon Keats, as well as a screening of the documentary „Lo And Behold: Reveries Of The Connected World“ (2016) by the legendary film-maker Werner Herzog. All this is already starting tonight at 7.30 p.m. with the big opening party at the Museum für Naturkunde. Looking for the not-to-be-missed-event of the outbound year? This is it. We’re giving away one pair of tickets for the entire festival to the particularly emotional amongst you. Send us an email headlining ‚POINT OF EMOTION‘ to hurra@muxmaeuschenwild.de.

Animal Lovers

Is it alright to eat humans? Shocked looks, vehemently shaking heads, “Are you mad?” reactions.  Of course not. But why is it alright to eat animals? Let the discussions begin. The fronts opened by this question are outside each other’s range of vision, between them a vast field of arguments for or against the equal treatment of animals and humans. What if? What if humans viewed animals as partners with equal rights? What if animals enjoyed the same right as human citizens? In New Zealand, a dog was once nominated for district mayor, in Manhattan, animals are blessed each year in October and in 2014, a man from Dresden married his cat. All relationships between humans and animals are made by society – and can therefore be changed by us humans. The exhibition ANIMAL LOVERS by the neuen Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst nGbK (the new society for fine arts) presents artistic works that put a new understanding of the relationship between animal sand humans up for discussion. Confrontation is welcome: On November 4th and 5th, the Symposium „Networking Animal Lovers“ is dealing with different human perspectives of the animal, sounding out the boundaries of zoophilia, approaches the phenomenon from sociological and judicial points of view and negotiates the role of animals in the media. So where do animals stop and humans start? Or is that the wrong question?

One more thing

mmw_fairphone-43bb75e2d60a5ecdbf4664dbf2826f0f

There are more smartphones than humans on this planet. We’ll let that sink in for a few seconds… Why is that? Sure, the producing companies are per se interested in keeping product life cycles as short as possible. Which they achieve with two approaches. First, you create a desire through new models, new features, improved performance or modified design. Second, and this one’s really mean, the products are produced in a way that they can’t exceed a certain life-span. There could, there must be a different way, thought a family man from the Netherlands. He developed the most sustainable and fair mobile phone worldwide, in short: Fairphone. The modular smartphone, now available in its second edition with changeable covers, offers its users more personal responsibility and control over their device. It can be easily opened and taken apart. That way, you can change a weak battery or broken screen glass yourself or even just build in the newest camera yourself very soon. Without techie-fancy-schmancy-skills. Longevity is key! But the company from Amsterdam also has its eye on the entire value chain: from mining the needed materials (there are over 40 in every smartphone), design and production to the life cycle. Fairphone advocates safe working conditions in suppliers’ plants and fair salaries, uses conflict-free materials such as tin, tantalum, wolfram and fair trade gold and fights for transparency within the supply chains of the electronics industry.  That’s how we like our Smartphones these days. Of course, Fairphone hasn’t reached all of its goals in terms of fairness yet. But it is a best practise, a broader than broad hint for the entire electronic industry. Last Sunday, Fairphone founder Bas van Abel was awarded with the Deutsche Umweltpreis – the largest environmental award in the whole of Europe. The Fairphone 2 can be ordered here as of now and will be delivered on December 16th, in time for Christmas. This is the revolution we’ve been waiting for.

Milena Glimbowski

The 2 Minute-Interview

Milena Glimbowski doesn’t really need an introduction. Since she opened Original Unverpackt, Berlin’s first package-free supermarket, she is always involved and usually leading when the topic is good, sustainable ideas that make our society, wait no, the world we live in better. The crowdfunding campaign for the implementation of Original Unverpackt was the most successful ever at that time – in meantime, it has been surpassed by Ein Guter Plan, a mindfulness calendar by…? Exactly, Milena Glimbowski. That’s kind of like James Cameron with ‚Titanic‘ and ‚Avatar‘, just with less water and blue folks. So if somebody knows something about crowdfunding and good ideas, then it’s her. At the moment, she working on publishing Ein Guter Plan in English, to then win over the whole planet. At the Fempreneurs Summit, she was one of the most inspiring and funny speakers ever and charmed us with her character and her thoughts. Enough reason for us to enquire about the future, humanity, her own (package) freedom, Anna and her circle of friends, sex, music and good books. Oh, and by the way: a fabulous Webinar with Milena took place last night on Edition F. Subject: How to be happier with less.

Is humanity on a good way?
We don’t know the destination, but we’ll get there in the end.

Why should we be having children right now?
Because we left the Einhorn condoms on the beside table.

What does a human need to live?
Love. For another human, for friends, for himself, for life.

Which three things can you not live without?
Sex. Music. Books.

Be honest, how package-free do you live?
I do buy crisps occasionally. I’m into additives. And the Ritalin for my ADHS from the pharmacy is not available without packaging yet.

When is a plan good?
When everything turns out completely different but you still have solutions. So a plan b, that might even turn out better than the original.

Please complete: In the year 2070…
… there will be no war, no hate, no poverty, no hunger. Because the machine will have taken over the world.

When was the last time you truly laughed?
I had a heartache and talked to my business partner Jan about it. He stayed professional as always and sent me this gif. That helped.

What are you battling at the moment?
My health. When I’m too motivated and work too much, my body sometimes can’t keep up.

Do you know a poem by heart?
Pitschpatschnass, floh ich unter das Vordach, des Fachgeschäfts, vom Himmel floss ein Bach, ich schätze, es war halb acht, doch ich war hellwach, als mich Anna ansah, anlacht.

The most important invention of mankind?
Fire? I hate the cold.

What would you cook for us if we came to visit you at home?
Quinoa with sheep’s cheese and beetroot.

What do we need to tell everyone about you?
When I see a skateboard, I just have to hop on – no matter whether I’m wearing high heels or sneakers. I’ve ruined quite a few shoes doing ollies.

What should everyone have done once in their life?
Get lost in strange city.

What would you change if you had the power to?
I would let everyone switch roles. To look at a stranger’s life through their eyes creates understanding.

What should no one know about you?
How tall I am.

Do have some good advice for all of us?
Frequently question what you take for granted.

Which question should we have asked you?
How tall I am.

Last words:
Nope.

What Kind of Bar Is This?

mmw_zittytipbar-a089f8939ab33dbb9f3cec84ad0b4d9f

If you want you know what’s really going on in Berlin, you’ll end up consulting the magazines Zitty or tip eventually. This can cause confusion occasionally (Zitty, Tip, Tiity, Zippy) but does help to end up in the right place at the right time in this beautiful city. Now, the two have created a real place together, and by that, we don’t mean the editor’s office but – muuuuuuch better – a joint bar. The cozy Kinski-Bar is closed, now open is a Zitty-and-tip-Bar, still nameless but with this promise: Thursdays to Saturdays, you can say cheers in the Friedelstraße 27 in Neukölln. With what exactly and how it’s all going to be nobody knows –  not even the owners and even less us. Zitty says: “It’s all very improvised, it was kind of a crazy idea”. And we think: every bar should start with a crazy idea.

„I think it’s very important to get more women into computing. My slogan is: Computing is too important to be left to men.“ This quote is from Karen Spärck Jones, the British computer science icon. And just how right she was becomes clear if you have a good look at five stone cold facts. In total, only five percent (that’s „FIVE“) of all tech start-ups world wide are led by women. Yes, even in the year 2016, even in times of global app-isation, even in Mecca of start-ups, Berlin. What a shame, considering that exactly those kind of women-led start-ups generate an average of 12 percent more earnings and an approximately 35 percent high return on invest than those launched by the boys. We’re not good at maths, but there no doubt that that is some incredibly high and, above all, unused potential right there. The Vodafone Institute for Society and Communication is of the same opinion and have therefore started a magnificent accelerator called F-LANE. Together with the Impact Hub Berlin and the Social Entrepreneurship Akademie, they are looking for innovative tech start-ups around the world that focus on women who have a business solution for a social problem and have the potential to have a big impact. The goal is to increase the participation of women in technological development and to improve the situation of men and women with the help of technology. During the intense six-week accelerator programme, taking place in Berlin for the first time from February 6th until March 17th 2017, four to five selected start-ups will experience financial support as well as consultation and intensive coaching from experienced mentors, trainings and networking opportunities. F-LANE is about accelerating the development of the companies and offer, as the name already suggests, a short cut to entrepreneurial success. For the entire duration of the programme, accommodation, catering and, if necessary, even full day child care is taken care of. Application is open from now until November 18th here. Did we mention that us here at MMW built and designed the entire brand? Yay! Check out the video!

There’s This Place.

In our 2-minute-interviews, we regularly ask exciting people to tell us about about a magical place, anywhere in the world. And now it’s our turn. Although – to be honest – it’s really not easy for us to reveal this wonderful little treasure, this little heaven on earth. The Dada is the most exclusive holiday home in Germany. It’s located in the former artists’ enclave Waldsieversdorf (hence the name) in the natural preserve Märkische Schweiz about 50 kilometres east of Berlin on a 900 sqm lake side property in the middle of serenity and nature. On 140 sqm of luxurious living space, ‚The Dada – Hide Away‘, as it is officially called, offer a new, simple kind of luxury for two to four guests – with a 24-hour concierge service, the classiest interior and extras that only let your heart beat faster but also let you forget any trace of big city hustle and bustle. With the wooden panels, the circumferential veranda and its many terrace doors, The Dada is reminiscent of an American farm house or a luxurious cabin at a Norwegian fjord. The two differently designed suites are equipped with selected pieces of furniture and accessories by Gervasoni, Graff, Lovely Linen, SIKA Design by Nanna Ditzel or AY Illuminate. You prepare your meals in proper style at the SMEG Range Cooker von SMEG or the FEUERRING barbecue. The corresponding wines are waiting at just the right temperature in the wine fridge. The private cinema has an endless selection of German and English films (and popcorn) in store, the spa area offers a Finnish sauna, a Dutch tub with a wood stove, a chromotherapy shower, a free-standing bath tub, a Gym in a Bag, yoga mats and much more. Leogant has made the water in the entire house spring-fresh. You can book The Dada starting at 450 Euro per night and person. We’re on our way.

crrrrrunch..!!

mmw_flakescorner-7f09b9d44b64e057174c9052f77020ab

Cornflakes? Sure you know ‘em. Fruit Loops, Smacks and the sort sweetened up pretty much every child’s breakfast morning. But what are Fruity Pebbles, Lucky Charms, Puffs or Shreddies? Don’t really know ‘em. Here, at least and without relevant international experience. Those of us who spent their days, weeks or months taking care of kids in the US, taking care of farms in Australia or taking care of their studies in whatever cool place abroad sometimes crunchily reminisce themselves back into a colourful flake heaven. Just the memory of the varicoloured Hagelslag on toast from the Dutch school exchange can be enough to take you straight there. These crunchy emotions are what three guys from Cologne have given into: Max, Thomas and Mark share a passion for cereals and opened the first Flakes Corner in their home town in 2015 and now – thanks to Getreideart – another one in Berlin. And they have them all. Large, small, fruity, chocolaty, individual or in a menu (yup, take-away snacks, too). Besides being able to choose between the most way out flavours in the form of flakes (Cookies’n’Cream! Marshmallows!!), you can also select the matching milk – be it mint, strawberry or bubble-gum-flavoured or lactose-free variations. Our recommendation is the secret favourite of the three founders, the „Peanut Butter Lover“: A blend of peanut butter crunch and chocolate crispies, dipped in strawberry milk and topped with a Malteser. Now, that’s just obscene.

Vittoria Salabelle

The 2 Minute-Interview

We met Vittoria Salabelle at the last Berlin fashion Film Festivals that we organised in June. Well ok, actually we just met her hands. And words. Well ok, not her actual hands, to be precise, but ones that were cut out, arranged and glued into beautiful collages by her. Vicky Salabelle is an artist. With her whole heart and soul. Born in beautiful Naples, she now lives in Eindhoven in the Netherlands. She describes her own style as „image-making moved by nostalgia“. Hands a expressive shapers of creative thoughts are her preferred object, her collages make something like an own personality out of them, one that talks to the beholder, touch him and ultimately move him. We just had to acquire one of her wonderful works, which she made especially for us.

Where The Hell…

mmw_tileapp-e2dec53d8dca3f823755202e87c40441

…is the car again? And where are the house keys hiding this time? Has my phone really been stolen now? We suppose there are significant statistics about how much valuable time of our lives is eaten up by looking for things we have misplaced, lost, given away or let someone steal. When we could be doing so much nicer things… Driving the car, for example, or locking the front door while chatting with friends on the phone. The smart-location company Tile has developed a petite and pretty Bluetooth-tracker that makes sure the supposedly lost things get in touch with us when they can’t be found. The »Tile Mate« is a flat chip with an eyelet that you can hang on your key chain, stick to your bike or strap on to your handbag. Using the Tile app on your phone, you can reach out to the tile which then answers with a selected ringtone to catch your attention. Or – as in the case of the whereverthehellparked car – shows you where it is on a map. It works vice versa, too, when it’s the phone you’re looking for. Click the Tile and your phone answers. Even in silent mode. That works half a million times per day, in 200 countries worldwide. Because losing things isn’t a phenomenon that only happens within your own four walls. In that case, the global tile community can help. And give a shout out when the object has been found. Like with Ryan’s photo equipment. When the American photographer returned from a conference in Dubai and his camera didn’t, he was informed by the community just a short while later where the apple of his eye was: In Zurich. Well, whaddayaknow…
